Intertextuality
Reading and Writing Skills - Grade 11
Intertext or Intertextuality is

Defining when an author creates a

new text using elements
Intertextuality from another text.

This happens when the new

text incorporates aspects of
the original text.

It often occurs when the

second author is influenced by
the first, resulting in a blend of
imitation and creation.

4 methods of intertextuality

RETELLING ALLUSION

QUOTATION PASTICHE
"The Lion King" is a retelling of
Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" set
in the African savanna with lions
instead of humans.
RETELLING

It is the restatement
of a story or re-
expression of a
narrative.
It is the method of directly lifting the
exact statements or set of words
from a text another author has QUOTATION
made.

In his speech, Martin Luther King

Jr. quoted the Declaration of
Independence, saying, "We hold
these truths to be self-evident,
that all men are created equal."
Allusion is a literary device where
a writer or speaker makes an
indirect reference to a person, ALLUSION
event, or piece of literature.

When someone says, "He

has the Midas touch,"
they are alluding to the
Greek myth of King Midas,
who turned everything he
touched into gold.
"She transformed into a real
Cinderella at the ball."
ALLUSION

This alludes to the fairy

tale of Cinderella,
suggesting that someone
underwent a magical
transformation
It is a text developed in a way that
it copies the style or other

properties of another text
without making fun of it unlike in
a parody.
Pastiche is a literary or artistic work that
imitates the style, form, or content of
another work or multiple works. Unlike
parody, which often involves mocking or
satirizing the original work, pastiche PASTICHE
typically pays homage to the source
material by emulating its characteristics
without altering or critiquing them. It can
involve borrowing elements such as
themes, motifs, writing styles, or visual
aesthetics to create a new work that
evokes the spirit of the original. Pastiche is
often used as a form of tribute or as a way
for artists to showcase their familiarity
with and appreciation for the works they
are emulating.
