YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

PERCENT - The term "percent" is derived from the Latin words per centum,
meaning "hundred" or "by the hundred". The symbol used is %.
Percent can be expressed as a fraction whose denominator is 100 or in
simplest/lowest term.

How many boys are there? (There are 43 boys.)

How many are girls? (There are 57 girls.)
How many children are there in all? (There are 100 children.)

In the given illustration, it shows 100%. The boys consist of 43% of the children
and the girls are 57%.
43
Percent can be expressed as a fraction. The fractional part of the boys is 100, while
57
the girls are 100.

 The grid is composed of 100 small squares. It is also used to illustrate percent.

 How many small squares are shaded? (There are 153 shaded small squares.)

 How many percent of the grid are shaded? (It is 153%.)

 We can also express the shaded regions in fractional form. You can write it as

MODULE IN MATHEMATICS 5
THIRD QUARTER/ WEEK 1/ DAY 3

OBJECTIVE: Visualizes percent and its relationship to decimal numbers using

models.

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

Decimal numbers are used to represent numbers that are smaller than 1
unit. Decimals are written to the right of the unit’s place separated by a
period.

Percent – means per centum or per hundred. Percent can be expressed as

a decimal, a fraction, and a ratio.

LET’S EXPLORE

A. STUDY THE FIGURE ON THE SIDE.

What percent of the grid is shaded?

(It is 58%)

What is the fractional part of the shaded

regions?
58
( 100)

How will you write the fractional part of the

shaded regions in ratio?
(52:100)

The fractional part of the shaded regions

can be written in decimal.
(0.58)

B.

 How many one whole are in the illustration? (There are 2 one whole)
3
 What is the fractional part of the shaded region? (The shaded region is 14)
 Express the fractional part of the shaded regions in percent. (It is 175%)
 How did it become 175%? (The whole part is 100% and the remaining part
3
is 75%.)
4
MODULE CODE: PASAY-M5-Q3-W1-D3

Name: _________________________________ Date: _________________

Teacher: _______________________________ Section:_______________

 How did it become 75%? (Look for a number that when you multiply it to
the denominator, it will become 100. What you multiplied to the
3 25 75
denominator should also be multiplied to the numerator. So 4 x 25 = 100,
3 3
that is why 4 in percent is 75%.) (So, 14 in percent is 175%.)
 Can 175% be written in decimal? (Yes.) How? (To change percent to
decimal, (a) Drop the percent sign; (b) Simply move the decimal point two
places to the left.) 175% 175 1. 7 5

 If in cases there are lacking numbers, you can add zeros (0) as place
holder.
175
 175% can also be written in fraction as 100, and in ratio it is 175:100.
 5% in decimal is written as 0.05

THIRD QUARTER/ WEEK 1/ DAY 4

OBJECTIVE: Defines percentage, rate or percent, and base

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

Rate ( r ) -is the number expressed in percent. Is the number of hundredths parts
taken. It is followed by a percent sign.

Base ( b ) - is the original number, or it is the whole

Percentage ( p ) - is a part of the base determined by the rate.

LET’S EXPLORE

A. Arthur planted 80 seedlings in his farm. There are 48 avocado

seedlings, and the rest are calamansi seedlings.

STUDY THE TABLE BELOW.

Number of Avocado Seedlings Calamansi Seedlings

Seedlings Number Rate Number Rate
80 48 60% 32 40%

How did we find the percentage of each seedlings?

The number 80 refers to the total number of seedlings which is considered as the
base.

There were 48 avocado seedlings which means that it is just a part of the total
seedlings. So, we consider 48 as a percentage since it is just a part of 80.

So, we could get the number of calamansi seedlings by subtracting 48 from 80

which is equal to 32. This is now the number of calamansi seedlings, which is
also considered as the percentage or part of the 80 seedlings.

How did we get the rate of each seedlings?

For us to determine the rate of each seedlings, we use the percentage of each
seedling divided by the total number of seedlings and write it with a percent sign.

Number of avocado seedlings

0.6 From 0.6, we moved the decimal point two

80 48.0 places to the right and add the percent sign
0 and added zero, so it is now 60% which is
480 the rate of the avocado seedlings.
480
0
MODULE CODE: PASAY-M5-Q3-W1-D4

Teacher: _______________________________ Section:_______________

Since you already knew the number of calamansi seedlings, we will now divide
the number of calamansi seedlings over the total number of seedlings to get the
rate of calamansi seedlings.

0.4 From 0.4, we can write it in percent by

80 32.0 moving the decimal point two places to the
0 right and affix the percent sign.
320 0.4 = 40%
320 So the rate of calamansi seedlings is 40%
0

B. Karl and Laura are going to buy new school bags. The bag that Karl
wants is worth Php 500 but with 50% off. On the other hand, Laura
wants to buy a bag worth Php400 with 25% off. Which bag costs
less?

Using a model will help you understand what the percentage is, the base
and the rate of the two bags.

50% of 500

100% of 500 = 500

50% 50%

Discount on the price New price of the bag

of the bag

o The Base is the total price of the bag which is Php 500.
o The rate is the number with has the percent which is 50%.
o Discount also refers to the percentage which is a part of the total
price.
𝟏
o If the discount is 50% it means it is 𝟐 of the total price.

o So, the discount that Karl will get is Php 250 because it is half of the
original price.
o Karl will just pay Php 250 for the bag that he buy.

Teacher: _______________________________ Section:_______________

25% of 400

100% of 400 = 400

25% 25% 25% 25%

Discount on New price of the bag

the price of
the bag

o The total price of the bag is Php400 which is the base in the
problem.
o The rate is 25% which is a number that has percent.
o The discount which is 25% of 400 is the percentage which is
only a part of the total price.
o Dividing 400 by 4 is equal to 100.
o Therefore, the discount for the bag that Laura will buy is only
Php 100, she still needs to pay Php 300.00.
o So, the bag that costs less is the bag that Karl wants to buy
because it only costs him Php 250 while the bag that Laura
must buy costs Php 300.

C. In a 10-item test, Charlotte got 80% correct answers. How many wrong
answers did she have?

 What represents the base? (The circular

object that has 10 divisions.)

 What does the shaded regions tell us? (It

is the 80% which is the percentage or the
part of the total items.

 How would you define the unshaded

regions? (The unshaded regions are the
wrong items which can also be
considered as the percentage.

How many students are there in a class? 50 students

How many percent want to go to college? 70%

We are looking for the number of students who want to go to

college. This means that 70% out of 50 students will continue their studies

in college. Therefore, we need to get 70% of 50. 70% is 70 out of 100.

Let’s solve.
