Alternate Captions - Data

Types Captions and Program

Captions
Summary

Data Types can be renamed to suit client internal terminology using

our data type captions functionality. In many cases we can avoid
creating a whole new Data Type by using the Data Type Caption
feature to rename an existing data type. This allows us to leverage
the existing account styles and emissions factors tied to the existing
Data Type. This function is currently configurable by the users with
the Partner Administrator role (not by clients themselves).

How to Create a Data Type Caption

Log in to the production server for a client. (This feature should not be
used on CommonServices.)
Navigate to the client organization and select the “Admin” menu.
Under the “Setup” section, select “Alternate Captions”.
(The term ‘Entity’ is used here because this feature can also be used

for renaming other ‘entities’ in the platform.)

Click ‘Create New’ to bring up the edit form:
1. Set the Entity to Data Type.
2. Instance: Select the relevant Data Type that should be
renamed.
3. Organization: This feature is restricted to the current client.
4. Alternate Caption: This field is limited to 100 characters.
The steps above will need to be repeated for all organizations within
a multi-company structure.

Scope

The Data Type Caption will replace the system default Data Type
name in all client-facing screens and reports. This includes standard
dashboards, standard reports, summary screens, powerReports,
programs and targets.

The Data Type Caption is not visible in the Account Style

Management screen since this screen is only used internally. Also,
the top 100 reports ranked by most frequently used have been
updated to display the Data Type caption.

As a user, if you come across a screen or report that you believe

should use the data type caption logic but doesn't, please raise a
ticket for the product team.
Notes

• The list of data types within an organization for which you can
create a caption is restricted to the data types corresponding
to all the visible account styles on the associate account styles
page.
• Special case - Electricity - Green. This data type normally does
not have an account style associated with it (it is a shadow
data type used to track the green electricity component of the
standard electricity data type) so to allow for an alias to be set
you will need to assign a dummy account style to associate,
set the alias, and then disable or remove the account style.

• Do not try to give two data types the same name. There is
validation to prevent the same caption being used twice. If we
didn't prevent this, it could cause reporting and dashboarding
problems - the captions are not intended to merge two or
more data types to sit under the same name.
