What is Content-based Approach?
Content-based Approach or Content-based
Instruction (CBI) is a teaching approach where
learners study language through meaningful
content. It motivates students to learn because
the subject matter is interesting and, allows them
to apply their learned language skills in a different
context instead of rotely memorizing vocabulary.
Importance of Content-based
Approach
This approach motivates students learning.
Keeping students motivated and interested
are two important factors underlying content
based instructions. Motivation and interest
are crucial in supporting student success with
challenging, informative activities that
support success and which help the student
learn complex skills.

Advantages
a. It helps students develop valuable study skills

learning becomes definitely more interesting
and motivating.
Disadvantages
a. Use of target language: overuse of the native
language can be a problem in some parts of the
lesson.
b. Teacher Expertise: The succes of CBI largely depends
on the teacher's ability to select appropriate content
and design effective language instruction activities.
Therefore, the quality of CBI can very depending on the
teacher's expertise
c. Time-consuming: designing a CBI lesson plan and
selecting suitable content can be time-consuming.
