Practical Test 2

The document describes a practical test on determining maximum power transfer. Students are instructed to choose a capacitive or inductive reactance, calculate component values, and record load resistances producing half maximum power. They must then prepare and submit a lab report on the test within a week.

Electro Technology Practical Test 2 2023/08/24

SURNAME AND STUDENT NO:

INITIALS:

Practical Two– Maximum power transfer

Apparatus: 2 voltmeters, 1 wattmeter, 1 inductor, 1 capacitor, 1 variable resistor, 1 variac

Prelab

Choose any capacitive or inductive reactance as guided by the tables below. Preferable
between 5 and 100 ohms. X =___________.

Refer to Figure 1 below and calculate:

(a) inductance (L), capacitor (C),

(b) RL0 for the maximum power transfer (0 dB),
(c) Calculate the value of the maximum possible output power.

Fill in Table 1 with values of C and L.

Figure 1: Circuit for the determination of maximum RL -----Ω to -----Ω
power transfer

Procedure:

(a) Connect the ammeter and voltmeter that will be used to measure the current and voltage of RL0 respectively. If
available, you may use the wattmeter first.

(b) Reduce the load resistance beyond RL0 to produce an output power that is half of the maximum possible (-3
dB). Record the value as RL1.

(c) Increase the load resistance beyond RL0 to produce an output power that is half of the maximum possible (-3
dB). Record the value as RL2.

Complete your values of RL in Table 3.

Please prepare the lab report and submit it within one week
