CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

Simple past tense is a simple verb form to indicate that an event occurred
in the past. In this verb form, the time of the event (yesterday, last two days, last
year) or the time period (for two months, for a day, for an hour) can be
specifically mentioned. This tense can also be used to form type 2 conditional
sentences.
The simple past tense is used to describe a completed activity that
happened in the past. In other words, the activity started in the past and ended in
the past.
In English, the simple past tense shows that you are talking about
something that has already happened. Unlike the past continuous tense, which is
used to talk about past events that happened over a period of time, the simple
past tense indicates that the action occurred at a certain time and then was
completed.

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

2.1 Simple Past Tense Formula

A. Simple past tense sentence forms

Simple past tense is formed from verb-2 (past tense) in the form of a regular verb
or verb "to be". Verb-2 is a bare infinitive (basic form of verb) with the addition of -
ed, -en, -d, -t, -n, or -ne for regular verbs or inconsistent forms of irregular verbs,
while in verbs "to be", verb-2 is in the form of was and were.

1. Affirmative

 Subjek + Verb 2nd form

= ( you-we-they-he-she-it ) worked

= ( you-we-they-he-she-it ) ate

2. Negative

 Subjek + did + not + Verb 1st form

= ( you-we-they-he-she-it ) did not work

= ( you-we-they-he-she-it ) didn’t eat

Note = Did is not used with Was and Were

= ( I-She-He-It ) was not (wasn’t) busy

= ( We-You-They ) were not (weren’t) busy

3. Interrogative

 Did + subjek + verb 1st form

= Did ( you-we-they-he-she-it ) work ?

= Did ( you-we-they-he-she-it ) eat ?

2
Note = Did is not used with Was and Were

= Was ( I-She-He-It ) busy ?

= Were ( We-You-They ) were busy ?

4. Negative Interrogative

 Did not – subject – verb 1st form

= Did not ( you-we-they-he-she-it ) work ?

= Did not ( you-we-they-he-she-it ) eat ?

2.2 Functions of Simple Past Tense Sentences

1) Simple past tense to talk about actions that occurred with a certain duration
of time in the past. The for preposition can be used to express the time period
of the event.
Example:
a) Vina and I went to the Ragunan zoo three months ago
b) Did he come on time yesterday?
c) The party started at 10.00 a.m.
d) Did you sleep enough last night?
e) I studied civil engineering for almost 4 years.

2) This verb form is to talk about past habits. Subordinate conjunction when is
usually used in this situation.
For example:
a) I often did exercises in the gym when I lived in
Bandung.
b) When I was a senior high school student, I always got
up at 4 am to study.

3
3) To show that there is a simple past action that occurs when a past continuous
tense is taking place.
Example :
a) I was reading a journal in the library when
someone burped out loud.

4) To show that an action (simple past) directly follows the finished action (past
perfect tense).
Example :
a) I had already finished my breakfast when
he picked me up.

5) This tense is used in conditional sentence type 2.

Example :
a) If she studied hard, she would be pass.
b) I would buy a sport car if I had much money.

2.1 Usage

A. The simple past tenses is used for an action whose time is not given but,
a) Occupied a period of time now terminated
b) Occurred at a moment in a period of time now terminated
These may be expressed diagrammatically . Ts here stands for time of speaking in
the present.
1. Example of type A

 He worked in that bank for four years

( but he does not work there now )
 She lived in Bekasi for a long time
( but she is not living there now )

2. Example of type B

 My grandmother once saw Queen Victoria

 Did you ever hear Roma Irama sing ?

4
B. The simple past tense is also used for past habit

1. He always carried an umbrella

2. They never drank coffe

C. The simple pat tense in regular verbs is formed by adding ed to the infinitive

1. Verb ending in y following a consonant change the y into I before adding ed

Example:

 Study : studied
 Fly : flied
 Try : tried
 Simplify : simplified
 Identify : identified

2. y following a vowel does not change

Example:

 obey : obeyed
 play : played
 survey : surveyed
 enjoy : enjoyed
3. when a ferb of one syllable has one vowel and ends in a single consonant
this consonant is doubled before ed
Example:
 Stop : stopped
 Drop : dropped
 Clap : clapped
 Beg : begged
 Fob : fobbed

5
4. Verbs of two or more syllables whose last syllable contains only on vowel
and ends in a single consonant double this consonant if the stress falls on the
last syllable :
 Admit : admitted
 Prefer : preferred
 Transfer : transferred
 Control : controlled
 Submit : submitted

2.4 Short answer to questions

Question – short answer – complete answer

+ Did you go ? – Yes, I did – Yes, I went

- Did you go ? – No, I didn’t – No, I didn’t go

6
CHAPTER III

CLOSING

3.1 Conclusion

we can differentiate between the simple present tense, the present continuous
tense and the simple past tense from the verbs used, if the simple present tense
uses verb 1st form , the present continuous tense uses verb-ING and the simple
past tense uses verb 2nd form in affirmative sentences . and in the simple past
tense it is more often used verb 2nd form and uses additional letters at the end of
words such as the letters 'y' and 'ed'.

3.2 Suggestion
In English grammar is very necessary because it can improve the wording
properly and correctly. In the use of simple past tense, do not confuse it with
simple present tense, present continuous tense past continuous tense and others.
Because what distinguishes them is from the use of verbs.
