II. APTIS’S STRUCTURE
1. Who is APTIS for?
- For businesses and employers.
- Needs of students in the process of improving English skills
- Exclusively for those working in the education industry to help
improve the quality of teaching at the organization.
2. Versions of APTIS: 4 versions (General, advanced, teens, teacher).
APTIS General test structure: 5 components (Core, reading,
listening, writing, speaking).
3. APTIS Advanced test structure: includes the APTIS core test, the
more difficult reading, listening, writing and speaking tasks from the
APTIS.

III. BAND SCORE

There are 4 skills tests corresponding to a score of 0-50 for each section

Choose 2 skills tests have a score range of 0-100


Choose 3 skills test have a score range of 0-150
Choose 4 skills test have a score range of 0-200

Grammar and vocab have a score range of 0-50

How calculate the final score of Aptis Esol:


• B1 = 2B1 + 2A2 ( = 3B1 + 1A1 = 1B2 + 3A2)
• B2 = 2B2 + 2B1 ( = 3B2 + B1 = 3B1 + C)
• C = 2C + 2B2

IV. FORMAT

1/ SPEAKING:
a) General:

The aptis general speaking test

Part 1 Personal information

You will have 3 question and you need to speaking for 30 seconds for
each question Tips

Shouldn't answer too short or too long

Part 2 Giving a Basic Description of picture /Opinion/ Comparing


with your own situation Describe 1 picture and answer 2 related

Part 3 (Describe Compare & Contrast) Speculate and Choose

Part 4 Discussion of Personal Abstract Ideas

You will have one minute to prepare and two minutes to respond Answer

Make sure it covers all of the questions in the same order they were

b) Advance
Parts and duration:
The Advanced Speaking test has 4 parts (3 main part and an additional
question)
It takes about 10 minutes.
Part 1: Describe, compare and provide reasons and explanations
You are asked to compare two pictures and then answer two questions
related to the topic.
You should talk for 45 seconds for each question.
Tips:
Practice comparing two different things (e.g. two cities or two houses).
Focus on describing their advantages and disadvantages.
Using the correct grammatical structures.
Part 2: Discuss personal experience and opinion in relation to an
abstract topic
You will be asked three questions about an abstract topic.
You are expected to talk for two minutes.
Tips:
Focus on answering each question and don’t go off topic.
Practice speaking for two minutes on an abstract topic (e.g. How do you
feel about ________?).
Part 3 and 4: Presentation and question on your presentation
You need to speak on a topic for one and a half minutes.
You will have one minute to prepare.
After that, you will be asked an additional question about the topic.
You need to speak for 45 seconds (no preparation time for this additional
question).
Tips:
Structure your presentation and provide both sides of the argument.
Act like you are speaking to an audience or a group.

2/ LISTENING
a) General
1. Part 1: Information recognition
Identify information such as phone number, room number, time...
2. Part 2: Information matching
Listen to a monologue or conversation to connect with appropriate
information.
3. Part 3: Opinion matching
Listen to a short conversation between two people, a man and a woman
and decide who is expressing an opinion.
4. Part 4: Monologue Comprehension
You’ll hear two people discussing a topic and expressing certain
opinions about it.
TIPS FOR APTIS LISTENING TEST
1. Read question carefully
2. Watch for synonyms
3.Listen to the whole recording
4. Use the second listen to confirm your answer
5. Answer every question – don’t leave anything blank.

b) Advance
General format:
- The Listening test has four parts and you have 30 minutes to
complete.
- You can hear twice for part 1, 2, once for part 3, 4.
- Listening section is given a numerical score between 0-50.
Detailed format:
Part 1: Identifying factual information:
- In this part, you will listen to five short recordings of monologues
or dialogues and answer one question for each recording.
- You listen to a short monologue or dialogue and identify specific
information.
Part 2: Identifying opinion and attitude:
- You listen to three separate monologues and answer two
questions for each recording.
- Preparation tips: Use the fact that you can listen twice to your
advantage here. Read through the questions before you listen.
Then, on your first listen, select your answers and listen a second
time to confirm.
Part 3: Understanding an extended spoken text:
- In this part, you will hear a discussion between a man and a
woman to identify who expresses which opinion.
- Preparation tips: You will only hear the recording once and you
have 20 seconds to read through the options before it starts.
Make sure you know what information you are listening for.
Part 4: Understanding an extended story:
- In this part, you will hear two separate monologues. You will need
to select the correct answer from a table.
- Preparation tips: You will only hear each monologue once. The
information in the monologue does not appear in the same order
as the table.
Marking scale: 0-50
- Each question is marked according to the answer key provided.
- Each correct answer is worth one mark.
- Each incorrect answer is worth zero marks.

Tips:
- Read the questions carefully before listening so that you know
what you’re listening for.
- Listen out for synonyms that could help you.
- Listen to the whole recording before choosing your answer.
- Use the second listening in Parts 1,2 to check your answers.
- Watch out word indicators.
- Don’t leave any question unanswered. If you’re not sure, guess!
- "Plug in" the situation.

3/ READING
a) General
APTIS READING TEST
-Number of questions: 29 questions.
-Time: 35 minutes to complete.
-The difficulty will gradually increase each part.
Part 1: Sentence comprehension
Fill the remaining five gaps by choosing the correct word from a
selection of three.
Tips:
Read each sentence and all possible answers carefully before making
your choice.
Part 2: Text cohesion
Click and drag the other five sentences into the correct order.
Tips:
Look for words that show how the sentences link with each other
Part 3: Opinion matching
Read seven statements and you have to match each statement to one of
the four opinions.
Tips:
Read the paragraph carefully, then read the statement and decide which
person' opinion represents best.
Part 4: Long text comprehension
Read eight paragraph headings and choose the best heading for each
paragraph.
Tips:
Choose the heading that best reflects its meaning.

b) Advance

A) General information about Aptis Advanced reading test:

-Number of parts: 4 parts.


-Time: 60 minutes to complete.
-Three parts are different from those in the Aptis General test.

B) Each specific parts of APTIS ESOL advanced reading test:

Part 1: Opinion matching

In this section, there are 4 people's opinions on a topic.


You will read and choose the person to give the appropriate opinion for 7
questions.

Part 2: Matching heading.

This part is the same as the APTIS general reading test.

Part 3: Missing gaps

This part gives you a passage with missing gaps.


You will choose the right word or phrase from the drop-down to complete
the blank.

Part 4: Reading across two texts


There are two short texts discussing the same topic.
You need to fill in the blank with the appropriate phrase.

C) Tips:

Read all the sentences carefully first, then decide on the correct order.
You need to look for words that show how the sentences link with
each other.

To perform well in section two, first read each paragraph so you


understand each person’s point of view. Then read the statements
and decide which person’s opinion it best represents.

In section three it is necessary to scroll the reading text to see all of it.
Select the appropriate heading from the drop-down list on the left-
hand side. There is always an extra heading that does not fit with any
paragraph.

And finally, it is important to remember that the best way to become a


better reader is to practise. Easy books written especially for English
language learners might help.

4/ WRITING
a) General
APTIS General Writing Test
- There are 4 parts to the Writing General test.
- Interacting in a social media-type written (conversation, write an email).
- All writing tasks marked by examiners.
- Each section has no specified assigned time limit.
- In total, the Writing test lasts about 50 minutes.

Four Parts Of Aptis Esol General Writing


● Part 1: Word-level writing
-In the first part, you have joined a club, course, or activity and must
answer a series of five text messages from other members of the club,
course, or activity.
-There is no extended writing in this part (no sentence writing), just
individual words.

Preparation tips:
-The focus is on communication (this means spelling, capitalization, and
grammar will not be considered by the markers).
- Spend no more than three minutes on this part.

● Part 2: Short text writing


You are asked to write 20–30 words. The focus is on writing sentences
that are on-topic and have accurate grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Preparation tips:
- Keep to the word limit and focus on accuracy.
- spend no more than seven minutes on this part.

● Part 3: Three written responses to questions


In this part, you will have a social network-type interaction. You will
receive three questions to which you need to respond.

Preparation tips:
- Answer all three questions and don't go off-topic.
- Focus on accurate spelling and punctuation and write sentences that
link together and make sense
- Keep to the word count of 30–40 words per answer.
- Spend no more than ten minutes on this part.
Part 4: Formal and informal writing
This part requires that you write two emails:
1) an informal email to a friend
2) a more formal email to an unknown person.

Preparation tips:

-Keep to the word count of 40–50 words for the first email and 120–150
words for the second email.
-Make sure your emails are written for different people. The first email
should be an informal email to a friend or close family member, while the
second should be a formal email to a company.
- Accurately write and have flexibility with the English language.
- Use a wide range of vocabulary, grammar, and cohesive devices.

● Analyze the question, make sure you fully understand the
question, and respond appropriately.
● Remember to review your writing and correct any errors, before
moving to the next question.

- There are 3 parts to the Writing test.

THREE PARTS OF APTIS ESOL ADVANCED WRITING

● Part 1: Three written responses to questions


In this part, you will have a social network type interaction. You will
receive three questions and need to respond.

Preparation tips:
- Make sure you correctly answer all three questions and don't go off -
topic.
- Focus on accurate spelling and punctuation and write a text that is
cohesive and coherent.

● Part 2: Formal writing


In this part, you will read an email from an authority. You need to
respond to the email in 120 –150 words, using the notes provided,
expressing how you feel about the situation.

Preparation tips:
- Make sure you are on-topic and that you use the appropriate register
for the situation.
- Avoid text message or social media language, instead focusing on
formal writing.

● Part 3: Article for website publication


In this part, you will write an article for a website that is both informative
and interesting.

Preparation tips:
- Notes about the topic are provided and you need to use the information
to help write the article.
- The article needs to be between 180–220 words.
- Try to make your article informative and interesting and use original
text (i.e. don't just
copy the notes)

5/ GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
-The core element of the Aptis test.

V. COMPARATING APTIS VERSIONS

Advantages:

- Aptis offers certificates for each level of English proficiency according


to the European Framework of Reference (CEFR), from level A1 to C2.

- Time to receive results is faster than many other foreign language

Comparison

- Unlike IELTS, TOEFL or TOEFL, Aptis certificate scores have


permanent value.

- Low exam costs: The latest updated Aptis ESOL certification exam fee
as announced on the British Council website is 2,000,000
VND/candidate/test session. Much cheaper than IETLS or TOEFL.

- Easy exam format: The IETLS test is considered much more difficult
than the Aptis and Toeic certificates. To achieve your goal of a high
score with IETLS, you have to spend a lot of time studying.
