Chapter 1: Introduction
Overview
This installation guide provides details and instructions for installing Fujifilm’s new Frontier Workflow
Management Software (MS) for retail lab systems.

In this guide, you will learn:

Basic, good-to-know information about the system and the installation you are about to perform.
The pre-installation tasks that you may need to perform before you install the MS software (see
page 7).
The different installation workflows in diagram form (see page 8).
How to install the MS software (see page 17).
How to register the newly-installed software (see page 92).
About additional device installations (see page 93).
How to uninstall the software (see page 157).
How to upgrade the software (see page 159).
How to backup the system (see page 160).

In this chapter, you will learn:

Some of the basic terminology used with the system (see page 4).
The various hardware pieces that can comprise a Fujifilm system (see page 5).

Getting Started
Abbreviations, Acronyms and Definitions
Term Definition

Digital Link Request Spooler Developed by Fujifilm, this application performs all background
processing for producing prints and CDs, receiving input from external
sources such as kiosk, and communications with remote systems via
the internet.
It also manages a database containing all production information, and
is responsible for scheduling of tasks and devices throughout the
system.
This application is also known as Simon.

FDD Frontier Driver Direct. This service provides more control and greater
messaging capabilities when printing.

FMPC The Frontier Manager PC, also known as the LPC. One of the terms
used for a separate computer used to drive an LP printer and receive
data from the scanner (if configured to do so).

Term Definition

Frontier The name used to describe Fujifilm developed printers.

Hyper-Threading Officially called Hyper-Threading Technology (HTT), this is Intel

Corporation’s trademark for their implementation of the simultaneous
multithreading technology on their Pentium 4 micro-architecture.
The technology improves processor performance under certain
workloads by providing useful work for execution units that would
otherwise be idle, for example during a cache miss.
A Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading enabled is treated by the operating
system as two processors instead of one.

LP Laser Printer. This is the abbreviation that pre-pends Fujifilm printer

model names. For example, LP5000.

LPC Laser Printer Controller, also known as the FMPC. One of the terms
used as a name for the computer, which is separate from the DICIII
computer that is used to drive a printer.

Panda (Printer ANd Device Developed by Fujifilm, this application provides an interface between
Application) the Digital Link Request Spooler and various devices, such as
Frontier, Copal, and Epson printers.
It manages device operations and provides status and messages to
the rest of the system in a consistent manner, so that devices may
easily be interchanged or added, as needed.

DICIII Digital Imaging Controller III computer, formerly known as PIC (Photo
Imaging Controller computer).

SP The abbreviation that pre-pends Fujifilm scanner model names. For

example, SP500.

SPC The name for the computer, separate from the DICIII computer that
drives the scanner.

Know Your System

It is very important to know your system configuration before installing the MS software to ensure proper
functionality and performance.

Chapter 2: Pre-Installation Tasks
Overview
Before installing the new software, you may need to perform several pre-installation tasks, based on
your system configuration.

If required, these tasks must be completed based on the following checklist:

_____ Disable the computer’s Hyper-Threading feature. This task may be optional; see your
Fujifilm regional representatives to determine if you need to perform this task. (For example
instructions, see Appendix A, page 102.)
_____ Install the base ghost operating system. This task is required; see your Fujifilm regional
representatives for installation instructions.
_____ Changing the computer’s IP address. This task may be optional; see your Fujifilm regional
representatives to determine if you need to perform this task. (For example instructions, see Appendix
A, page 102.)
_____ Verifying the computer system’s date and time properties. This task is required; see
Appendix A, page 104 for instructions.
_____ Installing a DYMO LabelWriter Printer. This task may be optional; see your Fujifilm regional
representatives to determine if you need to perform this task. (For example instructions, see Appendix
A, page 106.)
_____ Preparing the Frontier Manager computer (FireWire and cabling tasks). This task may be
optional; see your Fujifilm regional representatives to determine if you need to perform this task. (For
example instructions, see Appendix A, page 112.)
_____ Installing scanner computer software (Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5, Microsoft Windows NT
SP 6, Fujifilm A1 7.7, and FireWire tasks). This task may be optional, based on your scanner model;
see your Fujifilm regional representatives to determine if you need to perform this task. (For example
instructions for the SP2000 and SP2500 scanners, see Appendix A, page 143. For example
instructions for the SP3000 scanner, see Appendix A, page 149. If you are installing an SP500
scanner, the scanner software needs to be installed after the Frontier Workflow Management
Software.)
_____ Establish PC name and Workgroup. These must be set prior to software installation.

Note: Workgroups must be unique per DICIII system if you are using multiple DICIII & scanner or DICIII
& scanner & printer systems on the same network.

Chapter 4: Software Installations
Overview
After the ghosting process is complete, pre-installation tasks have been completed, and the system
has been restarted, the next step is to install the MS software.

The following sections provide separate instructions for:

Determining which software installation you should choose (see page 20).
DICIII Server Installation (see page 20).
Printer Installation (see page 27).
Scanner Installation (see page 35).
DICIII with Printer Support Installation (see page 41).
DICIII with Ask Printer Support Installation (see page 48).
DICIII with Scanner Support Installation (see page 55).
DICIII with Printer and Scanner Support Installation (see page 60).
DICIII with Ask Printer and Scanner Support Installation (see page 67).
DICIII Workstation Installation (see page 73).
DICIII Workstation with Printer Support Installation (see page 78).
High Capacity Image Processor Installation (see page 85).
Cancelling Installation (see page 90).

Device Combinations and Your Installation Options

There are eleven software installation options:
1. DICIII Server: the DICIII software is installed on a stand-alone computer.
2. Printer only: the printer-associated software is installed on the printer-associated computer.
3. Scanner only: the scanner-associated software is installed on the scanner-associated
computer.
4. DICIII with Printer Support only: the DICIII and FDD printer controller software are installed on a
DICIII computer that is connected to the printer.
5. DICIII with ASK Printer Support: the DICIII and ASK printer controller software are installed on
a DICIII computer that is connected to ASK printers.
6. DICIII with Scanner Support: the DICIII and scanner controller software are installed on a DICIII
computer that is connected to the scanner.
7. DICIII with Printer and Scanner Support: the DICIII and FDD printer controller, and scanner
controller software are installed on a DICIII computer that is connected to the printer and to the
scanner.
8. DICIII with ASK Printer and Scanner Support: the DICIII and ASK printer controller, and SP500
scanner controller software are installed on a DICIII computer that is connected to the printer
and to the scanner.

MS Global Installation Guide.doc
Last Updated: 8/3/2007
9. DICIII Workstation: the DICIII software is installed on a workstation equipped with a High
Capacity Image Processor.
10. DIC Workstation with Printer Support: the DICIII software is installed on a workstation equipped
with a High Capacity Image Processor that is connected to a printer.
11. High Capacity Image Processor: a rendering device equipped with SIMON that is used for high-
