Lesson 1: What is a computer?

Answer the following questions:


1. Name one example in real life to explain the difference between data and information.
2. Write down as many examples as you can think of for the following:
2.1. Input devices
2.2. Output devices
2.3. Communication devices
2.4. Storing devices
3. Where, do you think, takes processing place in a computer?
4. What is the purpose of handhold devices, e.g. tablets and cell phones? Name as many as you can think of.
5. Why are dedicated computers sometimes referred to as embedded devices?
6. You plan your 16th birthday party. Name THREE ways in which you can invite your friends electronically.
Name the device as well as the way, e.g. Cell phone – SMS. (You may name a cell phone only once more in
your answer.)
7. Name and discuss FOUR advantages and FOUR disadvantages of computers.
8. Collect pictures of computer devices from adverts in you local newspaper or magazines. Prepare a poster to
explain the input-processing-store-communication-output model of a computer.
