generously to all without finding fault,
and it will be given to you.”

Chapter 3:
CONTROLLING HAZARDS
AND RISKS
Lesson 1: Safety Procedures
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
1. OHS procedures for controlling hazards and risks
are followed
2. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is used
3. Organizational protocol are followed and observed
when caution providing emergency assistance
Introduction

All Personal Protective

Equipment (PPE) should
be of safe design and
construction, and should
be maintained in a clean
and reliable fashion. It
should be comfortable and
fit to wear, encouraging
worker use.
Introduction

PPE is used to reduce or

minimize the exposure or
contact to injurious physical,
chemical, ergonomic, or
biological agents. A hazard
cannot be eliminated by
PPE, but the risk of injury
can be reduced.
Types of PPE
1. Eye and face protection.
Employees can be exposed
to a large number of hazards
that pose danger to their
eyes and face. Some
potential eye or face injuries
are chemical splashes from
corrosive substances, hot
liquids, solvents, or other
hazardous solutions.
Types of PPE
2. Head protection. A head injury is dangerous because it can
cause damage or death to people for life. To protect employees'
head from injury, they need to wear safety helmet or hard hat.
Hard hat is used to protect employees from impact with other
objects as well as from electrical shock and burn hazards.
Types of PPE
3. Foot protection. Appropriate foot
wear should be worn by employees
to protect them from possible foot or
leg injuries due to falling or rolling
objects, exposure to hot substances
or corrosive or poisonous materials,
electrical hazards, and static
electricity.
Steps in Controlling Hazards and Risks

1. Conduct a hazard assessment such as

▪ Identifying hazards by conducting survey in the
workplace;
▪ Determining whether any hazard required PPE;
▪ Paying attention to working conditions that can
produce hazards; and
▪ Reassessing hazards whenever necessary, especially
when new equipment is installed.
Steps in Controlling Hazards and Risks

2. Select appropriate equipment. Ensure that all PPE

used is the right kind of equipment for the job, and is
maintained properly.
3. Have knowledge on the following:
▪ Which PPE is necessary?
▪ How to identify if it fits properly?
▪ How to put on, remove, adjust, and wear PPE?
▪ How to dispose of PPE?
▪ What is the limitation of using PPE?
Following and Observing Organizational
Protocol When Providing Emergency
Assistance
Accidents, fires, and other emergencies can occur
anytime and anywhere. Any workplace should have
procedures in dealing with emergencies to ensure
safety. Emergency preparedness is essential
because it lessens the impact of disaster or any
unexpected, potentially harmful occurrence. It could
be an injury, severe illness, chemical spill, fire, flood,
or storm, assault, etc.
Following and Observing Organizational
Protocol When Providing Emergency
Assistance
In case of emergency, the employees will do the following:
• Contact the right person to get help.
• Give the address and the right direction of your workplace.
• Identify the person within your workplace to contact with in case an
emergency happens.
• Know where the fire extinguishers, break-glass alarms, first aid kits,
safety showers, eye wash stations, and chemical spill control materials
are placed.
• Make sure you know how to use and operate the emergency
equipment.
• Know the basic first aid and learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
• Know where the emergency exits and evacuation area are located.
