(Colin and Puss enter from the Cobblers)

Colin I’m sure I had those boots, Puss…But I just can’t find them anywhere?! Can

you help me look for them?

Puss (Sees boots) Me-ow (as in Me How?)
Colin (Looking in the opposite direction to Puss) You…How? Well, you just need to

look!
Puss Meow, Meow…(picking up boots and showing Colin)
Colin Oh, amazing! You’ve found them…thanks Puss, I honestly don’t know what I
would do without you?
Puss Meow (as in ‘I know’, then purrs and strokes the boots)
Colin Not sure business is that great at the Cobblers though Puss…and I really
need that job. We need the money to pay King Ivor’s taxes.
Puss Meow
Colin I’ve tried to come up with some good ideas as part of business expansion

 Puss Meow?
Colin I’ve designed new beach footwear but just for one foot…(pause) it’s a flop
(Puss reacts)…and I did suggest we start making clown shoes like the
Cobbler in Ponty Pandy used to make, that said…those are pretty big shoes
to fill!
Puss (Looks to audience) Meow (then purrs and strokes the boots)
Colin You like them eh?
Puss Meow (nods head)
Colin That’s it! I’ve had a brilliant idea… how about… animal shoes?! Shoes for
animals. You can already get horseshoes…so why not dog slippers…I could

call them ‘hush puppies’ – alligator sandals…or ‘crocs’ (sees Puss with the

boots) or maybe cat boots!
Puss Meow
Colin Why don’t you try them on?
Puss Meow (Puss puts the boots on SFX – Magic and they fit perfectly, then starts

walking up and down the front of stage as if on a catwalk)

Colin They look stunning on you Puss!

Puss Don’t they just?
Colin (Stares at Puss, Puss stares back, then they both stare to the audience, then
back to each other) Did…you…just…talk?

Puss I’ve always been able to talk – you just haven’t always understood me!
Colin Blimey…

Puss Don’t feel bad – not many people can talk cat…
Colin But how can I understand you now?
Puss Not sure…don’t ask – me-ow (as in ‘me how’)
Colin I think we did that joke before
Sa

Puss Yes, but that’s when they also couldn’t understand me! I tell you what, it’s
not easy being a cat you know!
Colin No, I don’t imagine it is…
Puss So you have to make the most of your situation…

Princess (Enters and sees Puss in Colin’s arms) I’m sorry (Colin drops Puss on the
floor)
Puss Ouch!! (Puss gets up off the floor brushing himself off and licking his paws)
Princess I didn’t mean to disturb you Colin!
Colin You aren’t disturbing me…us…me! Princess Bethan!
Princess Did your cat just say ‘ouch’?
Puss His cat? (Points to Colin, Colin reacts and elbows him) I mean…meow (said

Colin He’s not been feeling himself recently have you Puss?
Puss Meow (said in a human voice)
Princess Well, I hope he feels better soon…(awkward pause) shoes!
Colin (To Puss) You heard Princess Bethan…shoo! shoo!

Puss Huh! Charming!
Princess No, I meant, my shoes Colin…Gwen said you had mended them, so I have
come to collect them.
Colin But don’t you have ladies in waiting to get them…or Gwen?
Princess Sometimes, I like to do things for myself. Plus, we don’t get to see much of

each other anymore. We’ve been friends such a long time, but now I don’t
usually get that much independence or chance to be alone…so I jump at the
chance when I do!

Puss You go girl! (Colin and Princess look at Puss) Meow (said in a human voice,
Princess brushes off the fact that she thought Puss spoke)

Princess So (holds out hands)

Colin (Holding the Princess’ hands) So…?
Princess My shoes…(releases her hands from Colin’s grip)
Colin Oh gosh…yes, of course! I’ll get them for you now Princess Bethan!

Princess You know you can just call me Bethan…Colin, as long as my father’s not
around – or Sir Hector… you know what he’s like for rules!
Colin Of course…I’ll fetch them for you now…Princess… I mean Bethan (Princess
smiles and Colin smiles back, they share a moment, then Colin exits into the
Cobblers)
Puss (To audience) Does anyone else here feel like a third wheel? (Looks at the
Princess) Meow (said in a human voice)

 Princess (In a cute animal friendly type baby voice) So, what’s your name, eh? Who’s
a pretty Puss? (Puss goes to the Princess and starts having a fuss and
purring)
Colin (Enters carrying the Princess’ shoes) Here you go Bethan
Princess Thank you Colin, they’re wonderful! (She kisses Colin on the cheek and then
they stare at each other. The Princess then goes to leave, but turns back
towards Colin) You know, sometimes I long for a simple life…you’re very
lucky Colin (Goes to exit, and then realises that her shoelace is undone and
so bends down out of Colin’s sight near the well)
Colin Lucky? Here that Puss…I’m lucky! (Some pride in his voice, Puss is cleaning
