Level of Self-Confidence in Classroom Activities among Grade 10

Students at Basa High: Basis for Enhancing Student Active
Participation
Introduction

The foundation of society growth is education, which provides people with the

information and abilities needed for both personal and professional success. Classroom

interactions and activities are essential for productive learning and student involvement in

the educational environment. However, the degree of student confidence might be a

substantial barrier to active involvement. When participating in class activities, students'

desire to participate, ask questions, and express ideas is influenced by their level of self-

confidence, which is defined as their conviction in their talents and value (Bandura, 1997).

To increase participation and provide a pleasant learning environment, educators and

stakeholders must have a thorough understanding of students' self-confidence levels.

According to University of South Florida (2023), self-confidence means accepting

and trusting yourself; it includes having faith in your skills and your capabilities which is

one of the reasons that can affect social interactions in and out of school premises. It is

knowing your strengths and weaknesses as well as having a positive view of yourself. Some

may have mistaken self-confidence with self-esteem, but they are different. Self-esteem is

how you value yourself and it changes depending on your experience and interactions with

different people thus having scenarios where you can be very confident in your abilities

but have low self-esteem.

In accordance with American Psychological Association (2020), low self-esteem or

lack of confidence leaves students doubting their ability to succeed, making them hesitant

to engage in learning or take appropriate academic growth risks. Furthermore, if the

student’s self-esteem is very low yet they are confident in themselves, they tend to conclude

that they are not worthy or that their answer is not worth saying even when they are certain

that it is correct. Low self-esteem and confidence give the child hesitation from raising

their hand, participating in school activities, or events involving the skills of the child.

Thus, class participation enables students to enter the educational process; in addition to

active engagement, it enhances learning in various ways.

Classroom activities are proven to have a great effect on those students that have

learned about the current curriculum. It is suggested by Dalmolin, Mackeivicz, Pochapski,

Pilatti and Santos (2018) recitation and other fun games that include answering questions

regarding the topic gives them a better understanding of the lesson as well as enjoying the

active bonding of students and teachers alike. Incorporating recitation and other enjoyable

games that involve answering questions related to the lesson topic not only enhances

students' comprehension of the subject matter but also fosters a vibrant atmosphere of

connection and engagement between students and teachers.

According to Philippines education (2023), teachers and parents encourage their kids

to participate more in active learning because it is not only more participatory but also has

additional advantages for the student, such as overcoming shyness and introversion issues,

making friends with classmates, etc. Although they are intelligent, there is a certain set of

pupils that frequently avoid this contact process. More engaged pupils and less indifferent

ones must be fostered, and this is the responsibility of both the instructor and the parents.

In the study of Linked in (2021), In discussions and policies related to education,

academic performance is frequently brought up. Deep and empirically validated knowledge

exists concerning the variables that shape school learning processes and have an impact on

their growth, although the focus of this knowledge is on learning process challenges.

Researchers from throughout the country and the world use the terms academic

performance and educational attainment interchangeably, although they do so in different

ways. Academic achievement can also be defined as a student who, while enrolled in a

public or private school system at the appropriate age and without interruptions or failures,

successfully completes a high school diploma or an equivalent degree. Academic

performance is frequently linked to successful students' individual capacities and abilities.

When compared to academic success, educational attainment is a more comprehensive

term.

Statement of the Problem

The intent of this study is to assess the level of self-confidence in Classroom

Activities of Grade 10 students at Basa Air Base National High School, Floridablanca,

Pampanga as basis for enhancing the student’s active participation.

This study will seek answers to the following questions:

Level of Self-Confidence in Classroom Activities among Grade 10
Students at Basa High: Basis for Enhancing Student Active
Participation

1. What is the level of self-confidence in classroom activities among Grade 10

students at Basa Air Base National High School, Floridablanca, Pampanga. In terms

of active participation in:

a. social interaction

b. talking in front of a crowd.

2. Does the student's level of self-confidence affect how they interact and participate

in school activities, such as:

a. groupings

b. individual performance task that involves acting or standing in front of a crowd.

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study are intended to benefit the following stakeholders:

Students. The results of this study will be useful to students since they will reveal how

confident they are throughout class activities. It can assist students in identifying their

strengths and areas for development, enabling them to create plans to boost their self-

confidence. At the end of the day, more self-confidence can result in better active

involvement, academic success, and general wellbeing.

Teachers. As it clarifies the elements affecting students' self-confidence in classroom

activities, this research will be helpful to teachers. The demands of their students can be

more fully recognized by teachers, who may then modify their teaching methods. The

research findings can also be used to guide the creation of interventions or training

programs for teachers who want to provide a safe learning environment where kids can

grow their self-confidence.

Parents. The education and development of children is greatly influenced by their

parents. The results of this research will provide parents with important information about

how confidently their kid participates in class activities. It can assist parents in determining

the areas in which their kid may require support and direct them in giving them the required

inspiration and encouragement to boost their child's self-confidence. This in turn may

benefit their child's general wellbeing and academic progress.

Educational institutions. The study's findings will be important for educational

institutions, especially Basa Air Base National High School, since they will emphasize how

crucial it is for Grade 10 students to develop their self-confidence. The conclusions can

help policymakers and school officials develop policies and interventions to boost learners’

self-confidence. This may help create an exciting and empowering learning atmosphere

that encourages academic success, active student engagement, and all-around growth.

Future researchers. Future researchers interested in investigating student active

involvement and self-confidence in various educational contexts or across grade levels

might use this study as a starting point. The methodology, conclusions, and long-term

effects of self-confidence on students' academic progress and outcomes can all serve as a

springboard for more research and studies on successful treatments, best practices, and

related topics. As a result, the body of knowledge in this area may grow as scholars’ study

relevant elements or variables that may affect self-confidence.

Scope and Delimitation

This study aims to identify students’ level of confidence and self-esteem a student

has. Students’ participation will be assessed according to section and number of students.

The respondents will be 50 Grade 10 students of Basa Air Base National High School

who will be randomly picked. The researchers will conduct the study from May to July in

the School Year 2022-2023.

Online platforms such as email and social media applications as well as face to face

interviews will be used to reach the respondents. The researchers will administer a 5-item

questionnaire regarding their interactions with the teacher during their recitation

descriptive interpretation of their answers. A weighted means will be applied to determine

the respondents’ general answer.
