MODULE 2: LESSON 2 03/06/2024

PROBLEM-BASED &
PROJECT-BASED LEARNING
Presentation by Celine Quijardo
AT THE END OF THE LESSON, THE
STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO:
discuss the salient features of problem-based
learning and project-based learning and their
application to the attainment for learning
competencies and learning outcomes;
analyze how technologies for teaching and LESSON
learning can be maximized in PBL and PrBL; and OUTCOMES
share some performance standards from the
Curriculum Guide that can employ PBL and PrBL

NATURE OF PROBLEM-
BASED LEARNING
It is an approach that involves a process of
inquiry and solving open-ended questions
that serve as the main problem that the
learners will work on. This learning activity is
done in small groups with each member
assigned a certain task to accomplish.
5 PRINCIPLES OF PBL
01. 02. 03.
Power of Learning All groups have
independent & happens in a to participate
self-directed group & teacher equally.
learning. is a facilitator.

04. 05.
Students learn Materials such as
about data, articles, can
motivation, be used to solve
teamwork, etc. the problem.
6-Stage
Process
1. Identifying the problem - current issues that
do not have just one answer;
2. Brainstorming - generate ideas; tackle the
problem through self-directed questioning;
arouse intrinsic motivation;
3. Collecting and analyzing information -
assigning group members to collect
information; collaborative collection of useful
information;
1. Synthesizing information - solving the
problem through synthesized relevant
data; knowledge building; 6-Stage
2. Co-building knowledge - presentation
of the solution to the learning
Process
problem/issue; and
3. Refining the outcomes - giving of
feedback and suggestions by the
instructor to help students improve;
learning from other group’s
presentation.
BENEFITS OF PBL
01. PROMOTES SELF-CONFIDENCE & MOTIVATION
02. REDUCES STUDENTS’ NERVOUSNESS DURING THE LEARNING PROCESS
03. INCREASES STUDENTS’ RESPONSIBILITY IN LEARNING
04. MAKES STUDENTS EASILY LEARN THE MATERIAL THROUGH SHARING OF IDEAS
05. PROMOTES PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS
06. PROMOTES SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING
07. PROMOTES ACTIVE LEARNING
08. MAKES STUDENTS EXPLORE MANY LEARNING RESOURCES
09. MAKES STUDENTS DEVELOP POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS LEARNING
BENEFITS OF PBL

intonations

01.
These online tools will allow the
learners embark on an open-ended
question collaboratively to be actively
connected and engaged in the group
task while monitoring their own
contributions.

02.
The teacher acting as a facilitator may
ROLE OF also have the opportunity to peep into
the activities of each learner thereby
TECHNOLOGY enabling him to give feedback at any
stage of the PBL activity.
ROLE OF 03.
TECHNOLOGY
Technology is simply the mediator for
collaboration and representation and
that it is the type of task and thinking
processes in which students engage
that determine the quality of learning.

04.
Productivity tools such as those for
writing, presentations, and others are
also available to assist learners and
teachers in accomplishing required
tasks and outputs from a PBL activity.
NATURE OF
Project-based learning is an approach but
has evolved as a teaching method that PROJECT-
engages learners in a series of planned BASED
tasks resulting to the generation of
solutions to a real-world problems. It is a
LEARNING
student-centered approach and is based
on John Dewey’s principle of learning by
doing and Vygotsky’s constructivist theory
of learning that advocates social
construction of knowledge.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY SKILLS

Using student feedback

questionnaire given to 99 students,
it was revealed that students
knowledge of the topic taken were
enhanced.
RECENT RESEARCHES
THAT HAVE PROVEN

ORAL COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE

The study revealed a significant

improvement in the learners’
overall oral communicative
competence after using PrBL as a
strategy.

DEVELOPMENT OF LIFE SKILLS

Their findings revealed that after

taking the PrBL course, there was a
significant difference. It concluded
that PrBL indeed promotes further
development of life skills.
