“THE EFFECT OF POOR READING COMPREHENSION ON THE DAILY

COMMUNICATION”

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The study, entitled “The Effect of Poor Reading Comprehension on Daily

Communication," benefits individuals who have poor reading and understanding
skills. People who have poor comprehension also have a problem communicating
with other individuals.

Our team came up with the idea to randomly ask individuals to answer the
questionnaires that have been prepared through Google Forms. It is to find solutions
to the problems when it comes to or talks about reading comprehensions by
introducing some effective reading strategies, such as questioning, visualizing, and
summarizing, that will allow them to become better writers, readers, learners, and
communicators, which will also help them improve their vocabulary. This study is
highlighted for individuals who are dealing with poor reading comprehension and
understanding skills. This study is not only for those people who have reading
comprehensions but also essential to other individuals in improving their
communication skills through the use of effective reading strategies such as inferring,
monitoring or clarifying, and skimming. Managing reading time is also essential for
every individual to improve their reading comprehension. Spending enough time to
read will help individuals improve their reading and understanding skills, which will
lead to good communication.

This study also includes suggested programs that would be beneficial for those
individuals with poor reading comprehensions to improve their reading and
understanding skills. The suggested programs will also help individuals improve their
communication with others.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Effective communication, which is essential for traversing personal and

professional domains, is dependent on an often-overlooked component: reading
comprehension. Reading comprehension is defined as the ability to digest textual
material, extract meaning, and build an accurate understanding (National Reading
Panel, 2000). It transfers directly into effective communication abilities.
Reading exposes people to a variety of material, which broadens their
vocabulary and knowledge (Anderson & Freebody, 2017). This promotes effective
expression in a variety of circumstances. Poor reading comprehension is a substantial
impediment to effective communication, affecting people of all ages and
socioeconomic backgrounds. Poor reading comprehension is defined as difficulties in
understanding and interpreting written text. It can appear in a variety of ways,
including difficulties with vocabulary learning, making inferences, and synthesizing
information. These issues can impair people's ability to understand instructions,
follow conversations, and express themselves accurately, limiting their participation
and engagement in everyday communication situations. Comprehension also entails
actively engaging with the text, processing material, and drawing inferences -
cognitive skills that are directly relevant to following discussions, absorbing spoken
nuances, and deciphering nonverbal signs during interactions (Cain & Oakhill, 2019).

Individuals who struggle with reading comprehension, on the other hand,

encounter considerable barriers to daily communication. Difficulty understanding the
genuine meaning of messages can lead to misconceptions and misinterpretations,
generating irritation, conflict, and impeding relationship development (Stahl,
Kostogiannis, & Royer, 2019). In terms of human relationships, poor reading
comprehension can strain connections and lead to miscommunication. People with
weak comprehension skills may misread subtle hints in written communication,
causing confusion or disagreement. Furthermore, their inability to grasp the
complexities of language may limit their ability to convey empathy, understand
others' viewpoints, or engage in meaningful discussion, lowering the quality of their
interpersonal interactions. A limited vocabulary and trouble formulating coherent
thoughts can impair their capacity to properly articulate themselves, making them
appear bored or lacking confidence (Oke, 2020). Poor reading comprehension has
serious consequences in professional contexts, including the inability to understand
job-related papers, interpret policies and procedures, and effectively deliver
information. Employees who struggle with comprehension may have difficulty
following directions, understanding training materials, or interacting effectively with
coworkers and customers. As a result, their productivity may drop, and they may
confront roadblocks to job advancement.
Addressing this issue is critical. Early intervention with specialized reading
programs can dramatically improve children's and teenagers' comprehension skills
(National Reading Panel, 2000). Furthermore, the consequences of poor reading
comprehension go beyond individual communication abilities to larger society
repercussions. In educational settings, children with weak understanding abilities may
struggle academically, resulting in reduced academic accomplishment and a higher
chance of dropping out (Connor et al. 2018). This reinforces the cycle of
underachievement and reduces prospects for social and economic mobility,
disproportionately hurting marginalized communities. Encouraging people to actively
engage with varied reading materials creates a love of learning and improves
comprehension skills (Oke, 2020). Furthermore, encouraging active learning practices
such as summarizing key points, discussing knowledge with others, and asking
clarifying questions can improve information retention and comprehension.
Furthermore, promoting a reading culture and offering access to a wide range of
reading materials can assist develop excellent comprehension abilities and a lifetime
love of learning (Metcalf, Sasson, & Cain, 2020).

It is critical to identify and address the fundamental source of this

communication barrier. The National Reading Panel noted in 2000 that early
intervention through focused reading programs can considerably increase
comprehension skills in children and adolescents. Furthermore, as Oke indicated in
2020, encouraging individuals to actively engage with varied reading materials can
promote a passion of learning and improve comprehension.
This can be enhanced by supporting active learning practices. Metcalf, Sasson,
and Cain's 2020 study found that techniques such as summarizing key points,
discussing content with others, and asking clarifying questions can considerably
improve information retention and understanding.

In short, developing a firm foundation in reading comprehension enables

people to traverse the complexities of communication more efficiently. By following
these tactics, we may help folks who are struggling with this crucial ability succeed in
both personal and professional situations.

In the context of the children in the specific place, the effects of poor reading
comprehension on daily communication take on added significance. The educational
landscape in the country often faces challenges, including resource limitations and
diverse linguistic backgrounds. Poor reading comprehension can exacerbate these
issues, potentially widening educational disparities.

For Filipino children, interventions to enhance reading comprehension become

crucial not only for individual development but also for addressing broader socio-
economic gaps.

Incorporating culturally relevant materials into reading programs can resonate

more effectively with Filipino children, fostering a connection between their lived
experiences and the content. Additionally, considering the linguistic diversity in the
Philippines, interventions should be sensitive to regional languages to ensure
inclusivity and accessibility. Implementing these solutions not only addresses the
immediate communication hurdles but also contributes to the larger goal of improving
educational outcomes and opportunities for children across the country.

Therefore, a nuanced and culturally aware approach to tackling poor reading

comprehension in the Philippines is essential. By tailoring interventions to the specific
needs and context of Filipino children, we can work towards bridging communication
gaps and fostering a more equitable educational environment.

In conclusion, the case study highlights the pervasive impact of poor reading
comprehension on daily communication for students. Struggling to grasp instructions
and essential information not only creates academic hurdles but also translates into
difficulties expressing ideas effectively. This impediment compromises the overall
quality of communication, contributing to misunderstandings and frustration in
various contexts, both within and beyond the academic sphere. Addressing and
improving reading comprehension skills is crucial for enhancing students' ability to
navigate and excel in daily communication challenges.

reading comprehension on students' daily communication. As the struggle to decipher
instructions and essential information persists, a ripple effect is felt across academic
and real-world scenarios. The impediment not only erects barriers to academic
achievement but also extends to hindrances in articulating ideas coherently. This
deficiency in communication skills manifests in various contexts, fostering
misunderstandings and cultivating frustration. It underscores the urgency of
addressing and enhancing reading comprehension abilities as a fundamental aspect of
academic development. By fortifying these skills, students can not only navigate the
challenges of daily communication with greater ease but also lay a robust foundation
for future success in both academic and professional realms. Ultimately, the case
study accentuates the pivotal role of proficient reading comprehension in shaping the
overall communicative competence of students.

IMPLEMENTATION

In the light of the findings of this study, it shows that respondents believe that
reading comprehension is important in our daily communication. Fifty percent of the
respondents agreed that reading comprehension is needed in daily communication
because they prefer non-verbal communication, they also believe that communication
will be much easy if you have high level of reading comprehension. They agreed that
improving reading comprehension is important for effective communication. In
recommendation, we highly encourage the teachers to expose children in reading, like
the program that the DepEd implemented recently. We would also like to implement
an early implemented education to improve reading skills on children.Language
teachers should therefore provide these students opportunity to improve reading
comprehension as it is important in daily living and in the future.Being aware of the
importance of reading comprehension in daily life might help language curriculum
and instruction designers to invent language teaching programs that generate the
positive attitudes which lead to having more successful language leamers.

Additionally, it can assist material writers in inventing and instructors in

picking up tasks that tackle importance of reading comprehension. In connection,
material writers should provide more reading tasks in the students since the
respondent said that poor reading comprehension can lead to misunderstanding. Also,
what should be provided are meaningful tasks, create situations in class where
students have real-life communication, activities related to their daily life and
meaningful tasks that give them the chance to reading comprehension.
