activity. Is everyone ready to listen? Yes Ma’am.

A. WHAT IS VERB

What is Verb? Raise your hand if you know

what is verb. “children raising their hand”

Okay Rhea, what is verb? Ma’am I think Verb is a word used to

express action.

You’re correct! Thank you.

A verb is a word that shows action or links a

subject to another word in a sentence. It is
one of the most important parts of the
sentence. It also tells the subject actions,
events, or state of being.

In short, like what Rhea said an Verb is a

word used to express an action, a condition,
or a state of being.

I will give some examples in order for all of

you to understand better of what is verb.
After that give your own example of what is
verb.

Examples:
1. Sofia run in the yard.
(The word “Run” is a verb, because
it described what Sofia do.)

So now can you give example of verb, Yes Ma’am, the example is that The
Anne? Orange smells good.

That’s correct and the verb in your example The Smell Ma’am.
is what?

That’s correct, now can you give us give us Ma’am, Ana and Steph loves to walk. And

me?

Okay good, do you know now what is verb?

And how to use it in sentence? Not that much ma’am.

Okay, I will give another example.

But before I tell what or us to identify what
is the verb in the sentence we ask our self
“What is happening?”

2. Mark eats his dinner quickly.

Ask ourselves, what is happening? Eating

Correct! Eating is happening. That’s why

eating is verb.

Children, do you already understand now Yes Ma’am, we understand it now.

what is verb?

Nice! So let’s continue our discussion.

PHYSICAL VERBS
 Physical Verbs are action verbs.
They describe specific physical
actions. If you can create a motion
with your body or use a tool to
complete an action, the word you use
to describe it is most likely a
physical verb.

Example:
1. Let’s run to the corner and back.

Honey give us another example of Physical Ma’am my example is, I hear the train
Verb. coming.

That is correct. Now Luis can you give Yes Ma’am and the Example is Call me
another example? when you’re finished with class

Republic of the Philippines
Tarlac State University
College of Teachers Education
Lucinda Campus, Tarlac City Tel. No.
(045) 493-0182; Fax No. (045) 982-0110

The physical verbs in my example and your

examples are “Run”, “Hear” and “Call”.

And even if the action isn’t very active, if it

is done by the body it is considered Physical
Verbs.

MENTAL VERBS
 Mental verbs have meanings that are
related to concepts such as
discovering, understanding, thinking,
or planning. In general, a mental verb
refers to a cognitive state.

Example:
1. I know the answer.

Who want to give example? Me Ma’am!

Okay, Anne She recognized me from across the room.

That is right!. Another example please? Me Ma’am

Okay, steph. Do you believe everything people tell you?

Good job! The words “Know”,

“Recognized” and “Believe” are Mental
Verbs. Because it refers to cognitive state
and cognitive state is a state of mind.

STATES OF BEING VERBS

 This is also known as linking verbs,
state of being verbs describe
conditions or situations that exist.
State of being verbs are inactive
since no action is being performed.
 These verbs, forms of to be, such as
am, is, are, are usually
complemented by adjectives.

Example:

(045) 493-0182; Fax No. (045) 982-0110

1. I am a student.

That’s correct!

The words “Am” and “Are” are Linking

Verbs. Because it described conditions or
situations that exist in the sentence.

B. TYPES OF VERBS

Now, let’s proceed to the types of verbs.

There are many types of verbs. In addition to
the main categories of physical verbs,
mental verbs, and state of being verbs, there
are several other types of verbs. It is grouped
by their functions.

1. Action Verbs
2. Transitive Verbs
3. Intransitive Verbs
4. Auxiliary Verbs
5. Stative Verbs
6. Modal Verbs
7. Phrasal Verbs
8. Irregular Verbs

Let’s go deeply about this type of

Verb.

Is everyone still there and ready to

listen? Yes Ma’am

Good.

1. Action Verb
Action verbs express specific actions
and are used any time you want to
show action or discuss someone
doing something. It’s important to
remember that the action does not

have to be physical.

Do you have any idea about Action

Verb? Ma’am is Run an action word?

Yes Ralph, it is an action word. And

here are some examples of Action
verbs.

Run Dance Slide

Jump Think Do
Go Stand Smile
Listen

So let’s use it in a sentence

1. He does it well
(The word “does” is an action
word. Because it described
someone doing something.)
2. I jump higher that my sister.
(the word “jump” is an action
word because express an action.)

Do you understand now what is

Action verb? So let’s proceed.
Yes Ma’am.
2. Transitive Verb
Transitive verbs are action verbs that
always express doable activities that
relate or affect someone or
something else. These other things
are generally direct objects, nouns or
pronouns that are affected by the
verb, though some verbs can also
take an indirect object, such as show,
take, and make. In a sentence with a
transitive verb, someone or
something receives the action of the
verb.

Here are examples of Transitive

Verb.

Love Respect Tolerate

Believe Maintain

Let’s use it in a sentence.

 Gary ate the cookies.

(The transitive verb is “ate”,
Gary is the subject, because it is
Gary who is doing the eating, and
the cookies are the direct object,
because it is the cookies that are
being eaten.)

There are also examples of verbs

used with both direct and indirect
objects:

 They sell him the tickets.

In this sentence, the tickets are the

direct object while him is the indirect
object.

Did you all understand what is

Transitive Verb? I want Rochelle to Ma’am the example of transitive Verb is
give an example about Transitive John punches him.
Verb.

Thank you for sharing that example

Rochelle, so let’s proceed.

3. Intransitive Verb
Intransitive verbs are action verbs
that always express doable activities.
They are different from transitive
verbs because there is no direct
object following an intransitive verb.

The Intransitive Verb are:

Walk Laugh Cough

Play Run

College of Teachers Education
Lucinda Campus, Tarlac City Tel. No.
(045) 493-0182; Fax No. (045) 982-0110

So let’s us it in Sentence.

 We travelled to London.

The intransitive verb is “travelled”,

the subject is we, because we are
doing the travelling, but London is
not a direct object because London is
not receiving the action of the verb.

Another example is? Louise give us Of course Ma’am, John eats before leaving
an example. for school.

That’s correct!

Joy can you give an example of Yes Ma’am and the example for
Intransitive verb? Intransitive Verb is He arrived with
moments to spare.

4. Auxiliary Verb
Auxiliary verbs are also known as
helping verbs and are used together
with a main verb to show the verb’s
tense or to form a question or
negative. Common examples of
auxiliary verbs include have, might,
will. These auxiliary verbs give some
context to the main verb.

Auxiliary Verb examples are:

Would Should Do
Can Did Could
May

Let’s use it in a sentence.

 I will go home after football
practice.

The auxiliary verb “will” is telling us

that the action of the main verb go is
going to take place in the future –
after football practice has ended. If
Republic of the Philippines

College of Teachers Education

(045) 493-0182; Fax No. (045) 982-0110

the auxiliary verb “will” was

removed, we get the sentence:

 I go home after football

practice.

In this case, there is no definite time

frame for the action. The sentence
suggests that going home after
football practice is just something the
subject I generally does. Other
examples:

In addition, we can sometimes use

the auxiliary very before the pronoun
to make a question here are some
example:

 Did we consider Bryan’s

feelings?
The word “Did” is the Auxiliary
Verb.

Are the class still with me?

Yes teacher!
Okay, let’s proceed.

5. Stative Verb
Stative verbs can be recognized
because they express a state rather
than an action. They typically relate
to thoughts, emotions, relationships,
senses, states of being, and
measurements.

The best way to think about stative

verbs is that they are verbs that
describe things that are not actions.
The stative verbs are all expressing a
state: A state of doubting, a state of
believing, a state of wanting. These
states of being are often temporary.
Republic of the Philippines
Tarlac State University
College of Teachers Education
Lucinda Campus, Tarlac City Tel. No.
(045) 493-0182; Fax No. (045) 982-0110

Here is some example:

 The doctor disagrees with

your analysis.

“Disagree” is a stative verb here, as it

describes the doctor’s state of being
– disagreement. Another example is;

 John doubts the doctor’s

opinion.
Wherein the word “Doubts” is a
stative verb.

6. Modal Verb
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that
are used to express abilities,
possibilities, permissions, and
obligations.

Modals Verb Examples:

Can Must May

Should Would
So let’s use it in a sentence.

 David may be late.

The Modal verb is “may”
because it is expressing
possibilities. Another example is:

Honey can you give example of Modal

verb? You must not delay.

You’re correct!

Am I clear about Modal Verb?

7. Phrasal Verb
Phrasal verbs aren’t single words;
instead, they are combinations of
words that are used together to take

on a different meaning to that of the Yes Madam!

original verb.
There are many examples of phrasal
verbs, some of which have colloquial
meanings, such as make up, hand in,
bring up, point out, look forward to.
Each time the verb takes the extra
word(s) it takes on a new meaning.

Phrasal Verb example:

Run out Go all out

Make out Hand out
Bring out Face up
Think through

For further understanding let’s use it

in a sentence.

 Mary looked forward to her

high school reunion.

The verb “looked” has taken on

“forward to” to become a phrasal
verb meaning to be excited about or
eagerly await something. Another
example is:

Did you all get it?

Okay, give me an example of Phrasal Verb. Yes Ma’am!

Okay Sofia. Me Ma’am!

That’s correct. Can you tell me what is the Dave make up stories all the time.
Phrasal verb that you used?

Verb and that is Irregular verb.

simple and past participle verbs.

Unfortunately, there are hundreds of
irregular verbs in the English
language.
But there are some of the most
common irregular verbs include: say,
make, go, take, come, know and see.

Irregular Verb examples are:
