Socratic Seminar Rubric

The document provides a rubric and checklist for evaluating student participation in a Socratic seminar. The rubric assesses active listening, accountability and respect, quality of comments, questions posed, and responses. Students are scored on a scale from 10-9 to 1-4 in these areas. The checklist allows students to self-assess their participation by checking boxes for taking notes, only speaking to add to the discussion, avoiding phones, citing the text, engaging questions, debate, and eye contact with peers during responses.

Socratic Seminar Checklist for Students

Directions: Use the following checklist as we conduct our Socratic Seminar as a form of
self-assessment. Place a check mark next to what you have done and give yourself a score
based on your performance.

Was I actively taking notes and writing down my responses?

Did I only talk when I was able to add something to the class conversation?
Did I stay off of my phone the entire time of the Socratic Seminar?
Did I respond with examples from the book?
Did my question engage the class in conversation?
Did my question spark any debate?
Did I ask any clarifying questions?
Were your responses directed at the classmates and not the teacher?
Were you making eye contact with your classmates in your responses?

While this checklist may not cover every detail from the rubric, it will give you a pretty good
understanding of what you need to do. Make sure you read over the rubric and ask any
questions before we begin!
