Persuasive in nature, the charity appeal for the Pink Rickshaw is meant to create awareness

and invoke an emotional response from the reader to support the cause. With the project’s
goals, challenges, and opportunities precisely mentioned, the appeal directly targets the
audience with a more logical tone than an emotional one. This guided textual analysis will
analyze how this appeal uses layout, image and copy to impact the target audience.

The appeal mainly caters to the ethos of the target audience as it provides a concise list of what
the Pink Rickshaw plans to achieve with the audience’s donations. Moreover, the appeal also
shows how the audience’s action is directly tied to the impact, thus furthering their persuasive
capabilities to get the reader’s donations. This can be seen in the subheadings ‘Objectives’ and
‘Opportunities’ where they outline the impact the audience’s donations will have on women in
Pakistan. The text also appeals to the pathos of the audience as the author convinces the
audience by talking about the harassment and dangers women and children face when awaiting
public transport or the lack of empowerment women suffer from due to their being at the mercy
of the male members of family whenever they require transportation.

Furthermore, the appeal’s language is accessible to all levels of learners and is directed to
those in more developed countries, specifically women who can help out disadvantaged women
to seek opportunities and develop themselves in a country like Pakistan. The lack of an
instructional and didactic tone also persuades the reader to support the cause as the author’s
genuine ideals are presented in the appeal.

By creating a space for feedback, the author appeals to the reader’s ethos as the author would
want to know how they could enhance the Pink Rickshaw or bring it closer to success. This can
be seen by the comments that donors can post on the appeal’s website which allows them to
express their thoughts on the Pink Rickshaw, which could also persuade likely potential donors
who are viewing the appeal. However, the inability of viewers to comment unless they are a
donor may seem counterintuitive as this doesn’t allow for criticism of the project. On the
contrary, the ability of readers to call the author directly shows the author’s genuine need to
make the project a reality and can appeal to the ethos of the reader.

The picture of the author with the project also gives the reader an idea of what their response
will ultimately result in and how it will help the women of Pakistan. It is also clear how the project
would require a rather huge amount of donations given the mechanisms and complications of
making the Pink Rickshaw a success.

To conclude, the appeal incorporates several techniques such as the aristotelean appeals, level
of language, feedback, and visual stimulus to impact the target audience and persuade them to
support the Pink Rickshaw’s cause.
