MOVIE ANALYSIS: ENCANTO

Theme:
In my point of view, the main message of Encanto is that every person has their own flaws and
imperfections. I saw that we, as human beings, born with magic or without magic has our own
weaknesses and strengths. I realized that we can’t be perfect at all times and that we make mistakes over
and over in our everyday lives. And you know what? That’s totally fine! We should learn to embrace our
own weaknesses and just show our true self.

Synopsis:
At the start of the story, the Madrigal family was introduced one by one featuring all of their magical
powers except for Mirabel. It was shown that Mirabel was the only one who wasn’t “gifted”. Her ‘Abuela’
or her grandmother always saw her as a dead weight and favoured her older sister Isabela more.

While everyone was busy with their own lives, Luisa, the second eldest sister was suffering quietly and
only Mirabel knows. She says that she felt “weak” when Mirabel saw that their house had cracks and that
the candle that was holding their magic almost died and nobody ever believed her!

Because of this, Mirabel wanted to fix their magic so she went around looking for clues. And one of the
clues, was her old Uncle Bruno. People say that his gift was to see vision, and all of it ended badly. When
Mirabel entered Bruno’s room, she found pieces of Bruno’s vision and when she put the pieces all
together, she saw herself. Now everyone thinks that she is the reason why the magic of the candle is
getting weaker…

But in the end, when their candle died. They realized that Mirabel wasn’t the problem. That she had
nothing to do with the magic getting weaker. They realized that with magic or without magic they should
fully accept and embrace each and every member of their family.

Symbolism:
1. Candle – it showed their gifts, talents, and blessings; it also symbolized hope
2. Casita/House – used as shelter, home, protection or refuge
3. Butterflies – symbolizes growth, hope, rebirth, or new beginning
4. Isabela’s change of clothing – when the show first started, she was wearing
a plain light purple dress which was suited to her Abuela’s liking. But when
she finally embraced her imperfections, she changed her dress to a bright
bluish purple one with a dash of other beautiful bright colors which was
more similar to her family’s outfits. Isabela only got to express herself when
Abuela changed.
5. Luisa’s powers – Luisa’s gift is super strength which symbolizes the strength
that an older sister needs to have in order to carry the family’s burden
6. Mirabel’s dress – Mirabel’s dress had a lot of butterflies embroidered in it. And like I said in
number 3, Butterflies symbolises hope or new beginning. And in the movie, Mirabel was the one
who made her family realized that they are not perfect, that they need to embrace all their
weaknesses. Mirabel became a way for her family to have hope, she became a way for her family
to have a new beginning.
