DSMV Assignment II
ASSIGNMENT-II
UNIT-IV
1. A shaft 50 mm diameter and 3 metres long is simply supported at the ends and carries
three loads of 1000 N, 1500 N and 750 N at 1 m, 2 m and 2.5 m from the left support.
The Young's modulus for shaft material is 200 GN/m 2. Find the natural frequency of
transverse vibration.
2. A shaft of 40mm diameter and 2.5m length has a mass of 15kg per metre length. It is
simply supported at the ends and carries three masses of 90 kg, 140 kg and 60 kg at 0.8
m, 1.5m and 2m respectively from the left support. Taking Young's modulus for shaft
material as 200 GN/m2, find the natural frequency of transverse vibrations.
3. Explain the term ‘whirling speed’ or ‘critical speed’ of a shaft. Prove that the whirling
speed for a rotating shaft is the same as the frequency of natural transverse vibration.
4. A shaft 1.5 m long, supported in flexible bearings at the ends carries two wheels each of
50 kg mass. One wheel is situated at the centre of the shaft and the other at a distance of
375 mm from the centre towards left. The shaft is hollow of external diameter 75 mm and
internal diameter 40 mm. The density of the shaft material is 7700 kg/m3 and its modulus
of elasticity is 200 GN/m2. Find the whirling speed of the shaft, taking into account the
mass of the shaft.
5. A vertical shaft of 5 mm diameter is 200mm long and is supported in long bearings at its
ends. A disc of mass 50 kg is attached to the centre of the disc. Find the critical speed of
rotation and the maximum bending stress when the shaft is rotating at 75% of the critical
speed. The centre of the disc is 0.25mm from the geometric axis of the shaft. Take
Young's modulus for shaft material as 200 GN/m2.

6. Derive the expression for the natural frequencies of free vibrations of an undamped two
degrees of freedom system shown in Fig.
7. Fig. shows a vibrating system having two degrees of freedom. Determine the two natural
frequencies of vibrations and the ratio of the amplitudes of the motion of the masses m 1
and m2 for the two modes of vibration. Take m1=1.5 kg, m2=0.8 kg and k1=k2=40N/m.
8. Determine the Natural frequencies of the vibratory system shown in Fig. Take m 1=7 kg,
m2=8 kg and k1= 100N/m, k2=200N/m and k3= 200N/m

9. A steel shaft ABCD 1.5m long has flywheels at its ends A and D. The mass of the
flywheel at A is 600kg and has a radius of gyration 0.6m. The mass of the flywheel at D
is 800 kg and has a radius of gyration 0.9m. The shaft has a diameter of 50mm for the
portion AB which is 0.4m long and has a diameter of 60mm for the portion BC which is
0.5m long; and has a diameter of d mm for the portion CD which is 0.6m long.
Determine: 1. The diameter of the portion CD so that the node of the torsional vibrations
of the system will be at the centre of the length BC and 2. The natural frequency of the
torsional vibrations. Take C= 80GN/m2.
10. A single cylinder diesel engine drives directly a centrifugal pump. The rotating mass of
the engine, flywheel and the pump with the shaft is equivalent to a three rotor system as
shown in Fig. The mass moment of inertia of the rotors A, B and C are 0.15, 0.3 and 0.09
kg-m2. Fins the natural frequency of torsional vibrations. Take C=84GN/m2.
11. Describe vibration isolation and transmissibility and derive the expression for the
transmissibility.
12. The mass of an electric motor is 120 kg and it runs at 1500 rpm. The armature mass is 35
kg and its CG lies 0.5 mm from the axis of rotation. The motor is mounted on five springs
of negligible damping so that the force transmitted is 1/11 th of the unbalanced force.
Assume that the mass of the rotor is equally distributed among the five springs.
Determine 1. Stiffness of each spring 2. Dynamic force transmitted to the base at the
operating speed; and 3. Natural frequency of the system.
13. A machine supported symmetrically on four springs has a mass of 80 kg. The mass of the
reciprocating parts is 2.2 kg which move through a vertical stroke of 100 mm with
Simple Harmonic Motion. Neglecting damping, determine the combined stiffness of the
springs so that the force transmitted to the foundation is 1/20 th of the unbalanced force.
The machine crank shaft rotates at 800 rpm. If, under actual working conditions, the
damping reduces the amplitude of successive vibrations by 30%, find the (i) Force
transmitted to the foundation at 800 rpm (ii) Force transmitted to the foundation at
resonance and (iii) Amplitude of the vibrations at resonance.
