Population Structure-1

The document discusses population changes as countries develop, including sparsely and densely populated areas. It introduces the demographic transition model, which outlines five stages of population growth as development occurs. Demographers study factors like birth and death rates to analyze population changes over time using tools like population pyramids.

answer
Demographers discovered that a country’s population growth rate passes
through 5 different stages as it develops economically. Demographers have
created a Demographic Transition Model (DTM) to describe these different
stages
Main task: Fill in the gaps with the key words to complete the paragraph
about the Demographic Transition Model.

The demographic transition model shows the different stages of population

change that a country will go through as it develops. All countries are said to fit
this model. Early on the model shows a country will have a high birth and death
rate, this keeps the population stable. However, as medical care improves the
death rate starts to fall, and that’s when the population explodes, as the natural
increase becomes so high. As better education starts to develop, and women
become more educated the birth rate decreases, this slows down the
population and is what we see in many developed countries like the UK. Places
such as India which have a high birth rate and a decreasing death rate, so have a
massive population growth will eventually move across to stage 3 and 4 of the
demographic model, as their population will start to stabilise and fall.

Demographers use graphs called

population pyramids to analyse
the structure of populations. A
population pyramid is a graph
that shows the age and gender
distribution of a given population.
These can help governments to
make predictions about the types
of services that will be needed in
the future
