2 - Resistors

The document discusses types of resistors including fixed, variable, potentiometers and rheostats. It describes resistor color coding and how the color bands represent values and tolerances. It provides examples of determining resistor values from color codes and letter codes.

Topic 2: Resistors and

Color coding

Resistor
• It is a two terminal circuit element that is specifically made to have a constant
resistance. (linear resistance)
• Linear resistors always obey the ohm’s law
• All resistors have a power rating which is the maximum power that can be
dissipated without the temperature rise being such that damage occurs to the
resistor.

Potentiometers and rheostats

1.Potentiometer 2.Rheostats
• Variable resistor with 3 terminals • Has 2 terminals
• Acts as a voltage divider • Used to control power to a load

Resistor coding
• Resistors are very small components and this makes it difficult to mark them
with rating like 500000 Ω.
• Color coding is used to mark the ratings of a resistor(rings are painted
around the resistor.
• The band placed near the end of a resistor should be considered the first
band.
• The 1st,2nd and 3rd bands are used to indicate the resistance of a resistor.
J.C.PHIRI 3/10/2024
Resistor coding
• 1st band=1st digit of the resistor value
• 2nd band=2nd digit of the resistor value
• 3rd band= multiplier
• 4th band =tolerance value
• Some resistors have a fifth band. What does it indicates?
• Others have 3 bands

• 47000 ohms but with 5% tolerance
• 5% of 47000=2350
• Actual value of resistance should be between 47000-2350 and 47000+2350
• 44650 to 49350

J.C.PHIRI 3/10/2024
Resistor tolerance
• Tolerance is the percentage of error in the resistor's value
• how much more or less you can expect a resistor's actual measured resistance
to be from its stated resistance

Class exercise
1. Determine the value and tolerance of a resistor having a colour coding of
• Orange- orange-silver-brown
• Brown-black-brown
• Yellow-violet-orange-red
• Red-yellow-white-orange-brown
2. Between what two values should a resistor with colour coding brown-black-
brown-silver lie?

J.C.PHIRI 3/10/2024
Resistor coding
• Another form of resistor coding is
letter coding.

tolerance
• F= ±1%
• G= ±2%
• J= ±5%
• K= ±10%
• M= ±20%

Class exercise
3. Find the resistor values
• R33M
• 4R7K
• 390RJ

solutions
• R33M= 0.33Ω ±20%
