Perceptron
A perceptron is a fundamental building unit of a neural network
in machine learning, which takes several binary inputs, multiplies
them with their weights, and produces a single binary output. It is
a type of linear classifier, i.e., a classification algorithm that
makes predictions based on a linear predictor function.
Inputs: Each perceptron in a neural network takes multiple
binary inputs, for example, x1, x2, x3, ..., xn.
Weights: Associated with each input, there are
corresponding weights, say w1, w2, w3, ..., wn. The weights
signify the effectiveness of each input, similar to the weights
in a regression model.
Summation: Each input is multiplied by its weight, and the
results are summed up.
Activation: The sum of the weighted inputs is then passed
through an activation function. If the activation function is a
step function, the perceptron outputs a 1 if the sum of the
weighted inputs is greater than a certain threshold, and a 0
otherwise.
In a neural network context, perceptrons are typically organized
in layers. The inputs are fed into the perceptron in the input layer,
the output of which then serves as inputs for the perceptrons in
the next layer, and so forth, until reaching the output layer.
Perceptrons can be used for binary classification tasks, such as
predicting whether an email is spam or not. However, for more
complex tasks that can't be separated by a single linear
decision boundary, more complex models like multi-layer neural
networks would be needed.
Neurons ( Nodes )
In the context of field of neural networks, a neuron (often also called a
node) represents a fundamental unit of computation. Inspired by the
neurons in the human brain, artificial neurons receive inputs, process them,
and generate an output.
Inputs: Each neuron takes in multiple inputs. These could be raw data
like pixels in an image, output from other neurons in a previous layer,
or even a single value depending on the network architecture.
1. The process begins with input data fed into the input layer.
2. Each input is multiplied by its respective weight, and these weighted inputs are then
passed through a sum function (often along with a bias term), which forms a net
input for the node.
3. The net input is then passed through an activation function, which decides if and to
what extent that information should progress further through the network (akin to
neuron firing in the brain). Common activation functions include the sigmoid,
hyperbolic tangent (tanh), or rectified linear unit (ReLU).
4. This process is repeated, and the information is propagated forward through the
network from layer to layer (hence the term "feedforward neural network") until it
reaches the output layer, resulting in a prediction.
5. The prediction is compared to the true value to calculate an error. This error is then
propagated back through the network (in a process called backpropagation),
adjusting the weights in a manner that minimizes the error. This is typically done
using an optimization technique like gradient descent.
6. The process of feeding inputs forward and backpropagating errors to adjust weights
is repeated for many iterations or epochs until the network is adequately trained and
the error is minimized.

Node Activation Function
Different activation functions are more suited to certain tasks over others,
depending on the specific characteristics of the task and data. Here's how some
activation functions may be applied:
▪ Binary Step Function: Used in binary classification problems where the output is
either 0 or 1. It is commonly used in Perceptrons.
▪ Linear or Identity Activation Function: Useful in regression problems or single-
layer perceptrons, as it outputs the input as is.
▪ Sigmoid or Logistic Activation Function: Frequently used in binary classification
problems, especially in the output layer of a binary classifier. The sigmoid
function outputs probabilities, which can be thresholded to create binary
classification.
▪ Hyperbolic Tangent (tanh) Function: Often used in the hidden layers of a
neural network as it centers its output to 0, which can make learning in the
next layer easier. It is widely used in classifiers as well.
▪ Rectified Linear Units (ReLU): Extensively used in Convolutional Neural Networks
(CNNs), it helps with the vanishing gradient problem, making the network learn
faster and perform better.
▪ Leaky ReLU / Parameterized ReLU (PReLU): These are used much like ReLU and
are a popular choice in deep learning models where ReLU may not perform
well due to dead neurons (where output is zero irrespective of input).
▪ Exponential Linear Units (ELU): This function can also be used to mitigate the
vanishing gradient problem, and is used in similar scenarios to the ReLU, Leaky
ReLU, and PReLU.
▪ Softmax Function: The Softmax function is primarily used in the output layer of a
multiclass classification problem where it provides a probability for each class.
These are just a few examples. The usage will largely depend on the problem
statement, the architecture of the neural network, the type of data, and many
more factors.
Types of neural
networks
Neural networks come in various types and architectures, each with its specific use cases and advantages. The
complexities of various tasks dictate the design and complexity of the neural network used.
Feedforward Neural Network (FNN):
This is the simplest form of a neural network where information moves in one direction—from input to output. There
are no cycles or loops, just a straight flow of information. Each node in the network does not store any state or
remember past inputs.
Multilayer Perceptron (MLP):
This is a type of feedforward neural network that has an input layer, one or more hidden layers, and an output
layer. MLPs are fully connected, meaning each node in one layer connects with a certain weight to every node in
the following layer.
Convolutional Neural Network (CNN):
CNNs are used mainly for image processing, name so for their mathematical operation called convolution
executed on the input data. CNNs have convolutional layers that apply a filter to the input, pooling layers that
reduce dimensionality, and fully connected layers that interpret and classify the features extracted by
convolutional layers.
Recurrent Neural Network (RNN):
Unlike feedforward neural networks, RNNs have loops allowing information to be passed from one step in the

text because they can remember previous inputs.
Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM):
LSTMs are an advanced type of RNN specifically designed to avoid the long-term dependency problem,
remembering information for extended periods. They are used for tasks requiring the handling of long sequences
of data.
Autoencoders (AE):
Autoencoders are unsupervised neural networks that are used for data compression, noise reduction, and feature
extraction. They have a symmetrical architecture and are trained to reconstruct their input data.
Radial Basis Function Network (RBFN):
RBFN is a type of FNN that uses radial basis functions as activation functions. They are mainly used in function

Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN):
GANs consist of two neural networks—an generator and a discriminator—that compete and cooperate with each
other. The generator learns to generate plausible data, and the discriminator learns to distinguish true data from
