What is an editorial?
It is an analytical interpretation of significant and timely
topics or issues. It expresses the stand of the newspaper on
controversial issues of the day. According to M. Lyle Spencer,
an editorial is an expression of facts and opinions in concise,
logical and pleasing order to influence opinion, or to
interpret significant news such that its importance to the
reader will be clear. It is usually written in formal language.
An editorial is an article that presents the newspaper's
opinion on an issue. It reflects the majority vote of the
editorial board. It is usually unsigned. Editorial writers build
on an argument and try to persuade readers to think the
same way they do. Editorials are meant to influence public
opinion, promote critical thinking, and sometimes cause
people to take action on an issue. In essence, an editorial is
an opinionated news story.

this way (acronym SPSA):
State the problem or situation. (NEWSPEG)
State your position or interpretation of the
situation.
Offer two possible solutions to the problem.
End with an appeal or summary of solutions.
Surviving Nature’s Wrath
Classes were suspended, many city streets were
flooded, and even President Rodrigo Duterte himself was
stuck in traffic. Natural calamities like typhoons do not only
disrupt our normal life, they also cost much as in the case
of tropical storm Henry, severe tropical storm Inday and
tropical depression Josie where the damage have reached
P2 billion, according to the Department of Agriculture (DA).
(NEWSPEG-summary of the news, controversial topic or
issue)
There is no way that we can stop natural calamities
from happening because these are acts of God, but we can
at least minimize the damage they make to human life and
property by taking care of our surroundings and Mother
Earth who has ways of protecting us from great danger.
(Interpretation of the Newspeg)
Floods that kill people and destroy property happen
because many drainage systems and sewage canals are
clogged. People do not segregate garbage and they throw
them anywhere, clogging waterways that lead to the seas
or rivers. If water cannot be released, they fill up the
streets and other low-lying areas. Mountains are also
denuded, and with no trees to prevent the onslaught of
water, they rush down to rice paddies and rivers.
(Presentation of Problem)
Flooding in cities happens all the time and so does the
clogging of waterways. Local Government must penalize
those who throw garbage anywhere. They must also be
consistent in keeping canals and drainage systems clean as
well as make the planting of trees mandatory. (Solution to
Problem)
When we clean our drainage systems and discipline
ourselves to segregate garbage and throw them in the
proper places, and take care that we do not abuse our
environment, we can be sure that despite natural
calamities, we will be able to survive. (Appeal to take
action and summary)
After all, Mother Earth protects those who care of her.
(End)
