Summary
Aspen Medical Pty Limited provides expeditionary healthcare services to remote regions and areas of high demand including Australasia, the
Pacific Rim, the Middle East, the United Kingdom and North America. The company has clients in the government, defence, mining, oil and
gas and humanitarian sectors and offers medical and health related services. Today, it has contracts in 12 countries across three continents
and almost 2,500 medical specialists on its books, according to The Australian Financial Review. Aspen Medical is headquartered in the
Canberra suburb of Deakin, ACT, and the company is led by co-founder and managing director Glenn Keys. For the financial year ended 30
June 2019, Aspen Medical reported revenue of $89.57 million (FY2018: $120.07 million) and a net loss of $5.05 million (FY2018: $3.07
million net loss).

Company HistoryLong-time friends Glenn Keys and Andrew Walker founded Aspen Medical in 2003, wanting to create a healthcare
company to service remote areas. The duo sought to provide quality healthcare in remote, challenging or under-resourced environments
where there is high demand for medical services. Within a year, the company had secured contracts with the Australian Federal Police (AFP)
and Australian Defence Force (ADF), and one to reduce United Kingdom medical waiting lists. Aspen Medical’s high-profile contracts
include providing health services across all of Australia’s 52 ADF sites, the Remote Area Health Corps (RAHC), the Nursing & Allied
Health Remote Locum Services (NAHRLS), and providing ambulance services in the United Arab Emirates. StructureAspen Medical
oversees a range of subsidiaries domiciled in Australia and oversees, which provide healthcare services to remote regions and areas of high
demand. Outside of Australia the company operates subsidiary businesses based in Canada, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, the United
Kingdom, the US, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Australian subsidiary, Remote Health Corps (RAHC), deploys GPs, Nurses and other health
professionals to remote communities in the Northern Territory. RAHC has placed more than 3,500 health workers in 100 Northern Territory
communities since 2008 and about 80% of the healthcare workers have done repeat placements. Financial PerformanceAspen Medical Pty
Limited saw revenue declining sharply over the 2019 financial year, bringing the figure to its lowest level since FY2010. In contrast, the
company had recorded strong growth several years earlier, with revenue more than tripling between FY2011 and FY2016, before steadily
declining since. Net losses also worsened slightly over FY2019, bringing the company’s net loss margin from 2.6% to 5.6%.Key
DevelopmentsIn November 2017, Aspen Medical signed an agreement with China’s Zhejiang Medical and Health Group to assist with
the expansion of medical facilities and services in Zhejiang. In a statement, Aspen said it would collaborate with Zhejiang Medical to
improve the rehabilitation and aged care services across hospitals and clinics in the province, while also providing clinical training to medical
personnel.Aspen Medical won a tender to provide health services to Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory through a four-year
more than $19 million contract secured in November 2015. The contract for subsidiary, Remote Area Health Corps, will see Aspen continue
to deploy health professionals in the communities over the next four years. Aspen Medical partnered with the Great South Coast Medicare
Local (GSCML) group to operate a new health network servicing western Victoria, in January 2015. The network services an area stretching
from Geelong in the east to the South Australian border and includes regional centres Warrnambool, Colac, Ballarat, Horsham and other
smaller communities. Aspen Medical was chosen as a partner because of its experience providing healthcare to rural and remote
communities, according to Fairfax Media. In June 2012, Aspen Medical was awarded the largest contract in its history when the Department
of Defence gave Medibank Health Solutions a four-year, $1.3 billion contract. AAP reported that in turn, MEDIBANK HEALTH
SOLUTIONS PTY LIMITED contracted Aspen Medical to provide medical practitioners, specialised and allied health professionals to all
defence facilities across Australia. The Canberra Times reporting that the deal was worth around $500 million to
Aspen.Mergers/AcquisitionsIn October 2016, Aspen Medical acquired a majority stake in Melbourne-based recruitment firm Ironside
Recruitment. The company said the acquisition target had provided it with key personnel during its Ebola Response contract in West Africa
in 2014 and 2015. “Both organisations understand how the hard earned skills and experience of ex-ADF personnel translate in the civilian
world and together we are dedicated to helping them sell their achievements in a way that employers see strategic value,” the company said
in its statement. Following the acquisition, Ironside founder Glen Ferrarotto assumed the role of executive director.
