What is a Choke coil?

A choke coil is simply an inductor with

large inductance that is used to reduce
the current in a.c. circuits without
much loss of energy. No heat is
generated so no loss of energy. When
we use resistance to reduce current,
there is loss of electrical energy in the
form of heat generated.
Principle of a choke coil

Choke coil is a part used in the electrical circuits

to allow DC current to flow through while
blocking AC current from passing. A choke
usually consists of a coil of insulated wire that is
often wound on a magnetic core although some
consist of a donut shaped “bead” of ferrite
material strung on wire. The low electrical
resistance allows DC and AC to pass with little
power loss but it can limit the amount of AC
passing through it due to its reactance. The choke
coil works because it can act as an inductor.
When the current pass through will change as AC
currents creates a magnetic field in the coil that
works against that current. This is known as
inductance and blocks most of the AC current
from passing through. This result to the currents
that do not change such as DC currents can
continue passing through while those currents
that are blocked by the magnetic field.

Construction of a choke coil

A choke consists of a coil of several

turns of insulated thick copper wire of
low resistance but large inductance,
wound over a laminated core. The core
is layered and is made up of thin
sheets of stalloy to reduce hysteresis
losses. The laminations are coated
with shellac to insulate and bound
together firmly so as to minimize loss
of energy due to eddy currents.
Working of a choke coil

A choke is put in series across an

electrical appliance of resistance R
and is connected to an a.c. source.
This forms an LR-circuit.
The average power dissipated per
cycle in the circuit is:
P(av)=V(eff.)I(eff.)cos=V(eff.)I(eff.).R/√R^2+(Omega)^2 L^2

Inductance L of the choke coil is very large so that

R << wL. Then Power factor, cos ~R~0 WL i.e. the
Average power dissipated by the coil is very
small. As Z = √R² + w² L² is large, so current is
reduced without appreciable wastage of power.

Preference of choke coil over

the ohmic resistance

A choke coil reduces the current in a.c.

circuit without consuming any power.
When an ohmic resistance is used,
current reduces but energy losses
occur due to heating. So a choke coil is
preferred.
A choke acts as an inductive
component in a power supply circuit.
It prevents R.F noise passing. While a
rheostat is a resistance component
whose resistance changes at different
points, and can be adjusted, usually
by turning a knob. The excess is
dissipated as heat. Long time ago,
rheostats were both inductive and
resistive in nature, because you had a
spool of wire, of many, many turns,
that was being tapped at different
points of turns and depending at
which turn you tapped, was the
resistance you got. It was also a way
of getting a different amount of
inductance at that point as well, and
this was wire wound resistors
essentially. These kinds don’t exist
these days, and essentially all
resistors are carbon resistors.
This is the main use of a choke, to
smooth out in a power supply circuit

Application of choke coil

The most common use of choke coil is

In fluorescent tubes with ac mains If

the tube is connected directly across
220 V source, it would draw large
currents which would damage the
tube.
Filtering Noise
Choke coils used in electronic circuits
help filter out high-frequency noise.
Placing a choke coil in series with a
circuit can block or impede unwanted
noise from interfering with the signal.
This is particularly useful in radio and
audio circuits, where unwanted noise
can cause distortion or interference.
Power Supply Filtering
Choke coils can help smooth out the
output of a power supply by reducing
ripple and noise. A low-pass filter
made by coupling a choke coil and a
capacitor lowers the high-frequency
noise and ripple in the power supply’s
output.

Energy Storage
When a current flows through a choke
coil, it creates a magnetic field that
stores energy. This stored energy is
useful when the current stops flowing
in applications requiring a sudden
surge in power.
Dimmer Switches
Power delivered to the light bulb is
controllable by adjusting the current
flow through the coil. This enables
adjustable brightness levels, making it
simple to modify the lighting to meet
various demands and moods.
