Aim: Find out IP, BP, and specific fuel consumption by performing a test on a single-cylinder diesel
engine.
Indicated power (IP): The power developed inside the engine cylinder by burning of fuel is
called as indicated power of engine.
It is calculated by:
Where:
Brake power(B.P): The power available at engine crank shaft for doing useful work is called as
brake power of engine.
It is calculated by:
Friction power: The difference between indicated power and brake power is called as
friction power.
It is calculated by
F.B = I.P – B.P in watt (W)
A certain friction of I.P. is lost due to friction between moving part like piston,
connecting rod, crank etc.
This amount of power lost is also knows as friction power.
Thermal efficiency:
1
It is ratio of work output of the engine to heat supplied by fuel.
There are two type of thermal efficiency:
1)indicated thermal efficiency
2)Brake thermal efficiency
It is calculated by
Eta ith= IP/mf.CV
1)IP=indicated power (kw)
2)mf = mass of fuel supplied/sec(kg/s)
3)CV = Calorific value of (kj/kg)
Where:
Mathematically:
Eta m = BP/IP = bth/ith = Pmb/Pmi
Where:
1)BP = brake power
2)IP= Indicated power
3)bth= brake power
4)ith= indicated thermal efficiency
5)Pbm= brake mean effective pressure(N/mm^2)
6)Pmi=Indicated mean effective pressure(N/mm^2)

Relative efficiency:
Tit is the ratio of indicated thermal efficiency to air standard cycle efficiency.
Mathematically:
Where: 1) ith= indicated thermal efficiency
2)a= air standard cycle efficiency
it is defined as amount of fuel consumed by an engine for one brake power production.
Mathematically: BSFC = mf/BP
Where:
1)mf= mass of fuel supplied/sec(kg/s)
2)BP= brake power(kW)
Its unit is kg/kWs
This is sometimes referred to as fuel flow (FF). We then define specific fuel consumption ( SFC)
as the quantity of fuel burned in unit time required to produce a given engine output. SFC is a
technical figure of merit that indicates how efficiently the engine converts fuel into power
