Develop Stage 1 of your Unit Plan using the template below:

Grade or Level: 4th Grade Science

Exploring the Earth

Description of unit… This unit will allow students the opportunity to understand three
different types of scientists. geologist, paleontologist, and archeologist. Students will learn
about the Earth’s features, dinosaurs, fossils, climate, and the center of the Earth. Students
will examine rocks, build volcanoes, and learn the vocabulary of each scientist.

STAGE 1- STANDARDS/GOALS
4 ESS1-1 -Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an
explanation for changes in a landscape over time (nextgenscience.org, 2024).

4 ESS2-1-Make observations and/or measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the
rate of erosion by water, ice, wind, or vegetation (nextgenscience.org, 2024).

4 ESS3-2-Generate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on
humans (nextgenscience.org, 2024).

Goals- Students will explain verbally the differences between each scientist. Students will be able to explain
the center of the Earth by using vocabulary words to explain each layer. Students will understand the
difference between sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rock. Students will understand fossil formation
and the difference between body and trace fossils.

Content Standard(s)
4.GLSSS- ALL NON-PRIORITY SKILLS SUPPORTING PROFICIENCY IN GRADE LEVEL
SCIENCE (AMPLIFYSCIENCE, 2024).

Students will understand how to apply basic scientific principles from the scientific method
to aid them in lessons about Earth science.
