d. Discussing new Alright class! This afternoon we are going to discuss
concepts and “The concepts of Kodaly method”
practicing new skills
#1 What is Kodaly method?
The Kodaly method is an approach to music (Pupils are listening)
education rooted in the idea that music should be a
social and cultural experience. The Kodaly approach to
teaching music asserts that musical concepts and
collaboration are best taught for young learners.
An approach to music education developed in Hungary
during the mid-twentienth century by Zoltan Kodaly.
5 Principles of the Kodaly method
1. Learning by singing :
The human voice is the fundamental instrument, and
it should be central to musical literacy through sung
“solfa” using a moveable-Do system.
2. Hand signs: Solfege
“solfa” and sight-singing can be supplemented by hand
signs, as developed by the English pedagogue JOHN
CURWEN, who was an influence on Kodaly.
3. Rhythmic proficiency:
The sight-reading of rhythmic patterns must be taught (Pupils are listening)
alongside tonal solfege.
4. Collaboration :
Kodaly believed that creativity and collaboration are
essential to a musical education and can be brought
out in group music lessons.
5. Cultural connections:
Music instructors should emphasize folk music even
pop songs in a student’s mother tongue to create a
visceral connection to music.
The 7 Solfège Syllable
Hand signs, also borrowed from the teachings of John
Curwen, are performed during singing exercises to
provide a visual aid, Kodály added to Curwen’s hand
signs upward/downward movement, allowing children
to see the height or depth of the pitch. The signs are
made in front of the body, with do falling about at
waist level and la at eye level.
(Pupils are listening)
e. Discussing new Now, let’s proceed to our group activity, I will group
concepts and you into two.
