Topic: Introduction to Trigonometry

De nitions:
• Angle: The gure formed by two rays, called the sides of the
angle, sharing a common endpoint.
• Trigonometry: The branch of mathematics that deals with the
relationships between the sides and angles of triangles,
particularly right triangles.
Key Concepts:
• Trigonometric Ratios:
• Sine (sin): Ratio of the length of the side opposite
an angle to the length of the hypotenuse in a right
triangle.
• Cosine (cos): Ratio of the length of the adjacent
side to the length of the hypotenuse in a right triangle.
• Tangent (tan): Ratio of the length of the side
opposite an angle to the length of the adjacent side in a
right triangle.
Theorems/Properties:
• Pythagorean Theorem:
• Statement: In a right triangle, the square of the
length of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the
squares of the lengths of the other two sides.
• Proof: By construction or algebraic manipulation.
Formulas:

Problem Solving:
• Problem 1: Given a right triangle with the opposite side
measuring 5 units and the hypotenuse measuring 13 units, nd
the sine and cosine of the angle opposite the opposite side.

• Problem 2: Find the length of the missing side in a right
triangle with an adjacent side of 4 units and a hypotenuse of
10 units.
• Solution: Use the Pythagorean theorem to nd the
length of the missing side.
Additional Notes:
• Trigonometry has applications in various elds including
physics, engineering, and astronomy.
• Trigonometric functions can be represented graphically as
periodic functions.
