Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students must be able to:

 Accurately find the common difference and the nth term of an arithmetic sequence;
 Correctly determine the arithmetic means between two non-consecutive terms; and
 Correctly solve problems involving arithmetic sequence.

Learn about it!

Definition 2.1
An arithmetic sequence (also known as an arithmetic progression) is a sequence where each
term after the first is obtained by adding a constantd , called the common difference, to the
preceding term.
In an arithmetic sequence, ifd >0 , then the sequence is increasing. On the other hand, if d <0
then the sequence is decreasing. If the first term of an arithmetic sequence isa 1, then the arithmetic
sequence is
a 1 , a1 +d , a1 +2 d , a1 +3 d , a1+ 4 d . . .. .

We can find the nth term a n of an arithmetic sequence using the formula for the general term
of the sequence, which is,
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d Formula

We can manipulate the formula for the general term of an arithmetic sequence to obtain
formulas for the other quantities. For instance, the formula for common difference is,
(a ¿ ¿ n−a1 )
d= ¿
n−1
Finally, finding a certain number of terms between two given terms of an arithmetic sequence
is a common task in studying arithmetic sequences. The terms between any two nonconsecutive
terms of an arithmetic sequence are called arithmetic means.

Let’s Practice
Chapter 1 Arithmetic Sequences and Series
Lesson 2 Arithmetic Sequences pg. 2
Example 1
Find the 16 th term of the sequence 2 , 6 ,10 ,14

Solution:
Step 1
Subtract any term from its succeeding term to obtain the common difference.
6−2=4
10−6=4
10−14=4
The Common Difference (d) is 4.
Step 2
Given the information a 1=2 ,n=16 ,andd=4 , substitute the values into the formula.
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

a 16=2+ ( 16−1 ) 4

a 16=2+ ( 15 ) 4

a 16=2+60

a 16=62

Therefore, the 16th term of the sequence is 62.

Example 2
Determine the common difference and find the 10th term of the arithmetic sequence 13 , 9 , 5 ,1 . . .
Solution:
Step 1
Determine the common difference of the given sequence.
9−13=−4

Step 2

Chapter 1 Arithmetic Sequences and Series

Lesson 2 Arithmetic Sequences pg. 3
Given the information a 1=13 , n=10 ,andd=−4 , substitute the values into the formula.
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

a 10=13+ ( 10−1 )(−4 )

a 10=13+ ( 9 ) (−4 )

a 10=13+(−36 )
a 10=−23

Hence, the common difference is d=4 while a 10=−23

Example 3
Find three arithmetic means between 7 and23.
Solution:
Step 1
We are given the values a 1=7 , n=5 anda n=23. We can solve for d by substituting these values
into the formula for arithmetic sequences.
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

23=7+ ( 5−1 ) d
23=7+ ( 4 ) d
23=7+4 d
23−7=4 d
16=4 d
16 4 d
=
4 4
d=4

Step 2

Chapter 1 Arithmetic Sequences and Series

Lesson 2 Arithmetic Sequences pg. 4
We can now calculate the arithmetic means by substituting the values of a 1and d into the
following expressions:
7 , a1 +d , a1 +2 d , a1 +3 d ,23

First Term: 7 Second Term: a 1=7 ; n=2 ; d =4

Fifth Term: 23 a n=a1 + d

a 2=7+ 4

a 2=11

Third Term: a 1=7 ; n=3 ; d=4 Fourth Term: a 1=7 ; n=3 ; d=4

a n=a1 +2 d a n=a1 +3 d

a 3=7+2(4) a 4=7 +3(4)

a 3=7+8 a 4=7 +12

a 3=15 a 4=19

This results in the sequence 7 , 11, 15 ,19 , 23 .

Therefore the arithmetic means are11, 15, and19.
