LESSON 5: CHART STYLES AND LAYOUT
After you create a chart, you can instantly change its look. Instead of manually adding
or changing chart elements or formatting the chart, you can quickly apply a
predefined layout and style to your chart.

To change chart layout, you can select the chart and click the Quick Layout option on
the Chart Design tab.

To change chart design, you can select the chart and click the chart style that you
want to use on the Chart Design tab in the Chart Styles group.

To change the color of a chart, you can select the chart and click the Change Colors
option on the Chart Design tab.

LESSON 6: UNDERSTANDING SPARKLINES
A Sparkline is a small chart that’s displayed in a single cell. A Sparkline allows you to
spot time-based trends or variations quickly in data.
Select all the data (data only, not column or row headings); if you’re creating multiple
Sparklines, select all the data. Choose one Sparkline type on the Insert tab. Specify
the location for the Sparklines and press OK.

Three types of Sparklines:


Line Sparklines
Column Sparklines
Win/Loss Sparklines
INSERT SPARKLINES
Line Sparklines
Similar to a line chart. As an option, the line can display with a marker for each
data point.

Column Sparklines
Similar to a column chart.
INSERT SPARKLINES
Win/Loss Sparklines
Each cell displays the change from the previous month. Each data point is depicted as
a high block (win) or a low block (loss). In this example, a positive change from
the previous month is a win, and a negative change from the previous month is a loss.
MODIFY SPARKLINES
Changing the Sparkline type
After you create a Sparkline, you can easily change the type by clicking one of the
three icons in the Type group on the Sparkline tab.

Changing Sparkline colors and line width


After you create a Sparkline, you can easily change the color by selecting the style in
the Style group on the Sparkline tab.

Highlighting certain data points
To highlight certain aspects of the data, you can select the following checkbox options
and the color of respective data points will change:
High Point: The highest data point
Low Point: The lowest data point
Negative Points: Negative values
First Point: The first data point
Last Point: The last data point
Markers: Data markers, only available for Line Sparklines

Update Data Source Location for Sparkline Data
To update the source data range for the sparkline, click Edit Data option on the
Sparkline tab and choose either Edit Group Location & Data or Edit Single Sparkline ‘s
Data. Select the location for the new dara and press OK to complete.

Delete sparklines
To delete the sparklines, click Clear option on the Sparkline tab and choose either
Clear Selected Sparklines or Clear Selected Sparkline Groups.

USE QUICK ANALYSIS TO FORMAT DATA
The Quick Analysis tool makes it possible to analyze your data quickly and easily using
different Excel tools. The Quick Analysis tool button appears at the bottom right of
your selected data.
There are 5 types of analysis tools in Quick Analysis toolbar:
Formatting: Highlight data using conditional formatting.
Charts: Chart the selected data.
Totals: Create common summary formulas.
Tables: Summarize data in a table or PivotTable.
Sparklines: Mini charts placed in single cells.

FORMATTING DATA
Conditional Formatting allows you to highlight parts of your data by adding Data Bars,
Colors, etc. This lets you quickly visualize the values in your data.

Besides apply Conditional Formatting on the Home tab, you can click Formatting on
the Quick Analysis toolbar. You can then select the option you want by clicking it.

TOTALS
Totals can be used to calculate the numbers in columns and rows. You will have
functions such as Sum, Average, Count, etc.

You can click Totals on the Quick Analysis toolbar and select the option you want by
clicking it.

DISABLE THE QUICK ANALYSIS FEATURE
You can turn off the quick analysis feature in Excel in the Excel options menu by going
to “Options” under the “File” tab. Under the General tab, uncheck the “Show Quick
Analysis Options on Selection” tick box to toggle it off.
