Method
Two open international multi/stakeholder-based two-day workshops
(in Sweden and in the United Kingdom) resolved close to 400 written
comments on two consecutive drafts. The workshop group was
dissolved when IWA 26 was published.

Decision method:
Consensus, i.e. not unanimity or vote. The group negotiated until all
significant parts of any concerned interests could accept the text.

Target Groups

• IWA 26 is aimed at any business or organization using ISO


26000:2010 or using any one of the many ISO management
system standards (MSS), e.g. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001.

• This includes stakeholders related to social responsibility and


management systems, such as ISO MSS certified
organizations, consultants, training centers, ISO technical
committees locally and internationally, management system
auditors, local and national government agencies.

Messages

• IWA 26 is an ISO IWA, International Workshop Agreement

• IWA 26 is not an ISO standard or an ISO Management System


Standard.

• IWA 26 can be used by any type or size of organization

after ISO members developed ISO 26000 Guidance on social
responsibility and the new structure for all management
system standards.

IWA 26: Content

Short summary:

Clause 3 offers 20 definitions that help the user apply IWA26

Clause 4 is aimed primarily at users who are more familiar with ISO
26000: it focuses on the structure of ISO management system
standards and how this relates to ISO 26000;

Clause 5 is aimed primarily at users who are more familiar with the
ISO management system standards: it focuses on the guidance given
in ISO 26000 and the structure for ISO management system
standards

Clause 6 describes how integrated management systems and ISO


26000 can be used together;

Annex A shows the main linkages between the clauses of ISO 26000
and the structure for ISO management system standards, and is
intended to help users of ISO 26000 to use management system
standards;

Annex B shows the main linkages between the structure for ISO
management system standards and the clauses of ISO 26000, and is
intended to help users of management system standards to use the
guidance in ISO 26000.

IWA 26:
Application

• Organizations using IWA 26 are recommended to have a


copy of ISO 26000:2010 and an ISO Management System
Standard available

• Organizations using IWA26 can communicate this but from a


stakeholder perspective it is often more important to
communicate how the organization manages its social
responsibility impacts, i.e. its contribution to sustainable
development.
