Patterns of Development
- helps us sort out information and shape paragraphs or essays.
- can help organize and outline reflecting the purpose of writers

Point of View
- refers to the perspective of the writer in narrating the story.
- First point of view – I
- Second point of view – You
- Third point of view – They, them

Description
- Means to tell what something is like.

Classification
- Means to sort items in order to group together those with similar characteristics and
distinguish them from different characteristics.

Definition
- explains a concept, term, or subject.
- its main purpose is to tell what is something is.
- commonly used on the science, humanities, and business.

Exemplification
- One of the most common and effective way to show or explain an idea or point.

Comparing and Contrasting


- are ways of exploring the similarities and differences between two things.
- comparing shows the similarities
- contrasting shows the difference

Problem – solution
- Is basically an essay that starts with identifying a problem and then proposes at least
two or more solutions.

Conclusion
- call action, convincing reader he/she needs to act
- reminds the reader on the benefits and significance of the solution

Cause and effect


- there exist a causal relationship
- cause is what makes a particular thing to happen
- effect is what results from a particular situation.

Persuasive writing
- Intends to convince readers to believe in an idea or opinion and to do an action.

Properties of a Well Written Text

Organization
- also known as arrangement
- focuses on the arrangement of ideas, incidents, evidences, or details

Organization Techniques

Physical Format
- immediately apparent to the readers
- it is seen on how the text Physically appears.
- Boldface, Underline, italics, etc.

Signal Words
- textual cues that readers can use to follow a text.
- transition from one point to another

Structure
- provides the framework upon which the text is organized
- Beginning – Introduction, thesis statement
- Middle – Supporting details
- End – conclusion, summary, final message.

Lead or hook
- Is the first or two sentences of your essay.

Coherence
- refers to the overall sense of unity in a passage
- talks about one idea

Cohesion
- very important aspect of academic writing
- refers to the connection of your ideas both at the sentence level and at the paragraph level
- talks about many ideas

Language Use
- One of the clearest indicators of a well-written text.

Informal Language
- Usually used in writing oneself or writing to family, friends, and colleagues.
Formal Language
- Used in academic, business, and official texts.

Unbiased Language
- That is free of racial bias, free of religious bias, and free of gender bias.

Mechanics
- Are conventions used in writing.

Spelling
- Forming of words according to accepted usage.

Punctuation
- Symbols used to aid the clarity and comprehension of written Language.

Capitalization
- Act of writing letters in uppercase.
