What is a Digital Library?
-IFLA/ UNESCO Manifesto for Digital Libraries
- an online collection of digital objects, of assured quality that are
created or collected and managed according to internationally accepted
principle fore collection development and made accessible in a coherent
and sustainable manner, supported by services necessary to allow users
to retrieve and exploit the resources.
- A digital library forms an integral part of the services of library, applying
new technology to provide access to digital collections. With a digital
library collections are created, managed and made accessible in such a
way that they are readily and economically available for use by a define
community or set of communities.

- A digital library complements digital archives and initiatives for the


preservation of information resources.
What is a Digital Library?
- “An informal definition of a digital library is a managed
collection of information, with associated services, where
the information is stored in digital formats and accessible
over a network.
- Digital libraries contain diverse information for use by
many different users. Digital libraries range in size from
tiny to huge. The unifying theme that is that information is
organized on computers and available over a network,
with procedures to select the materials in the collection,
to organize it, to make it available to users, and archive it.”

• Hybrid Library
- Provides services in a mixed- mode electronic and
paper, environment, particularly in a co-coordinated way.
Derived from a strand of eLib which explored the issues
surrounding the retrieval and delivery of information in
these type of environment but also investigated the
integration of different electronic services so that single
search approach be offered to the End user.

• Virtual Library
- Access to electronic information in a variety of
remote locations through a local online catalogue or
other gateway, such as the internet
Characteristics of a Digital Library

STARBOOKS: the First Philippine Science Digital Library

What is STARBOOKS?
• STARBOOKS contains thousands of digitized science and
technology resources in various formats( text and video/ audio)
placed in specially “pods” set in user-friendly interface. Its special
feature are:
• It’s a standalone Information Kiosk, hence, information
access is possible even without internet connection;
• Information available is read – only;
• It is a compendium of S&T information gathered from all
over the world– one stop S&T information source; and
• It features videos dubbed “Tamang DOSTkarte Livelihood
Videos” to stimulate every Filipino’s entrepreneurial
capacity.
Challenges of Digital Library

CONCLUSION
- Digital libraries are redefining the role of libraries in
society & role of librarians & Information specialist.
- The concepts of Digital libraries are actually services
added to the traditional libraries wherein the resources
which can only be utilized with computers.
- Digital libraries will hopefully co exist with traditional
libraries whether within them or as separate entities.
However the role of professionals will drastically
changes in digital environment.
