Identifying simile and metaphor in a given poem
or sentence.

So class, I here a poem which entitled a “Clouds”


Let us find out in the poem, to what are the things
are the clouds being compared to.

Now before we proceed to the poem, I have here


a set of pictures in order to unlock the difficult
words that you might encounter in the poem that I

So class, let us now proceed to the poem, I


will read the First poem, then afterwards you will
read aloud.

Clouds

Clouds all like silver lambs


On low green hills.
Feeding on blue meadows
Watered by rills.
Clouds are like snowy dawn.
Playing with winds
Clouds are small, willful clues.
With playful minds.

Clouds are huge butterflies.


Radiant with rays
Clouds are beast of the wilds.
On stormy days.
Clouds are the sky giants.
Their tears are rain.
Dropping on leafy plants
Down on the plain.

2. In the first two lines of the poem, what are the

So, in the first two lines of the poem, the clouds


being compared to the silver lamb.

3. What do you think is the characteristic of a


clouds that makes a silver lamb? Who can give the
similarities of clouds and the silver lamb? Because of its white color.

The characteristics or similarities of the clouds


are being compared to a silver lamb is because of
its color which is white.

Now let us look at the ninth line of the poem.

4. To what clouds being compared to in the 9th line


of the poem? (Pupils look attentively in the ninth line in the
poem.

The clouds are compared to a butterfly.
In the ninth line of the poem the clouds are being
compared to a huge butterfly.

5. Why the clouds being compared to a huge


butterfly?

The clouds are compared to a huge butterfly


because of its shape or form.

Very good class now give yourselves five


claps. (The pupils give themselves five claps).

Based on what we have talked lately, the


clouds are being compared into different things
and the comparison between two unlike subjects
are called figure of speech.

The two basic form of the figures of speech are


simile and metaphor.

Simile- is a direct comparison between two


things that are unlike or different. The comparison
is made clear by expression such as like or as.

(The teacher will provide a sample of simile).

1. Clouds are like silver lamb.


2. Clouds are like many dawns.

In the first line, the things that are directly


compare are the clouds and silver lamb.

And in the second line the things that are


directly compared are the clouds and many dawn.

From the two lines taken from the poem the


words use in making comparison in the word like
and this comparison of two unlike subjects with
the use of like or as is called simile.
Next, we have the Metaphor.

Metaphor- There is a direct comparison between


two unlike things, notice that comparison is made
without the use of like or as.

(The teacher will provide an example of


metaphor).

1. Clouds are huge butterflies.


2. Clouds are the sky giants.

In the first line, the things that are indirectly


compared are the clouds and huge butterflies.

And in the second line, the two things that are


indirectly compared are clouds and sky giants.

So those lines taken from the poem are all made


without the use of like or as and those are example
of metaphor.

Always remember that in metaphor, comparison


is made without the use of like or as.

Think Aloud:

Why do we need to compare two things or object?

So, class, sometimes we compare two unlike (Varied answers).

C. Guided Practice

Now, let us have a group activity. Want you to


form two groups.

(Start counting 1,2 1, 2 ………)

Before we proceed to your group activity, let us


first have the standards for group activity.

Alright! Class here are the set of standards for

● Follow instructions correctly.

● Avoid make unnecessary noise.

● Finish work on time.

Direction: Identify the figure of speech used in
each statement, write the capital letter S if it is a
(Simile), and M if it is (Metaphor) then encircle the
two things that are being compared.

Example: S 1. The baby is as cute as a puppy.

_____2. The boy was smart as fox when trying to
pass his test.
_____3. Life is a highway.

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Tell what figure of speech is used in


each of the following sentence. Write S for
Simile and M for Metaphor. Do this in your one
whole sheet of paper.
