Abstract

One of the most important factors in determining the general health and quality of

plant growth is the pH level of the soil. Plant biochemical processes and nutrient uptake

both depend on maintaining an ideal pH level. However, farmers and gardeners may find

it difficult to reach the perfect pH. The use of affordable and natural alternatives becomes

crucial in this situation. The potential use of Lacatan banana peel (Musa acuminata)

extracts as an acidic soil pH level neutralizer is the main focus of this study. The

Philippines' widely grown lacatan bananas offer a plentiful and easily obtainable source for

soil amendment. Banana peels are heated and squeezed during the extraction process to

create a solution that is simple to incorporate into the soil. Three setups, including

controlled and experimental groups, were used in a carefully planned experiment in a

controlled setting with the required equipment to assess the effectiveness of this banana

peel extract as a soil pH neutralizer. The purpose of the experiment was to determine how

the banana peel extract affected the pH levels of the soil and, in turn, the health and growth

of the plants. The findings of this study may have a big impact on farmers and gardeners

because they provide a low-cost, long-term way to adjust the pH of soil and foster a

favorable environment for plant growth. It is crucial to investigate novel and

environmentally friendly methods in agriculture since they offer a substitute for traditional

soil amendments, especially during times of global crisis. This study not only fits with the

current global emphasis on sustainability and environmental consciousness, but it also adds

important insights to the field of soil management. The research creates opportunities for

additional investigation into safer and more sustainable alternatives in soil amendment

practices by providing a workable and approachable solution to a typical agricultural

3

problem. In the end, the findings from this research may enable those working in

agriculture to make wise choices that advance the health of their plants and the

environment.

Chapter 1
Introduction

One of the most important things in the world that benefits the

environment is crop yields are greatly impacted by soil acidity, which also

affects crop growth and productivity. Traditional soil pH neutralization

techniques, including using agricultural lime, can be expensive and

environmentally hazardous. Banana peels, especially those from Lacatan

bananas, contain bioactive substances that might be used in farming. These

peels help reduce soil acidity and increase soil fertility since they are high in

potassium and calcium. Lacatan bananas are a desirable source of organic

material for farming because of their high nutritional content. Banana peels are

being used more frequently as a sustainable substitute for conventional lime

techniques. The study investigates the application of Lacatan banana peel

extract as a soil pH neutralizer in an effort to offer a practical and sustainable

alternative to current practices. Additionally, the study encourages the

sustainable use of agricultural waste, minimizing organic waste generation and

providing useful information for both farmers and the environment.

Soil health is crucial for the survival of life and preserving biodiversity.

The physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of soil control its health,

and fertilizers play a significant role in modern agriculture. Soil pH is a vital

factor in determining agricultural health and production. To neutralize soil pH

in areas with acidic soils, it is essential to explore practical, affordable ways.

Utilizing organic waste to create ecofriendly soil amendments is a potential

6

direction. This study focuses on the evaluation of Lacatan banana peel extract

as a potential remedy for balancing soil pH under acidic conditions. Growing

crops in acidic soils, which have a pH below 6, presents significant difficulties,

such as limiting nutrient availability, limiting microbial activity, and impairing

plant growth. Banana peels from Lacatan contain compounds that can be used

as improving natural substances. The study aims to determine whether banana

peel extract can increase soil pH levels and enhance agricultural production.

This study intends to determine whether Lacatan Banana (Musa

Acuminata) peel extract may effectively lower acidic soils' pH levels. This

study aims to provide important insights into the development of sustainable

and environmentally friendly solutions for soil remediation in agriculture by

conducting a thorough analysis, taking banana variety specific characteristics

into consideration, and evaluating the wider implications.

The health and productivity of agricultural ecosystems are significantly

influenced by soil pH, which measures the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. The

availability of vital nutrients to plants is substantially influenced by the pH level

of the soil, which has an impact on crop growth and output. Soil acidity is a

widespread problem that provides serious obstacles to sustainable agriculture

in many parts of the world. Conventional practices frequently involve the

application of chemical amendments, such as lime to raise soil pH, to counteract

the negative effects of acidic soils. However, these chemical solutions are not

without disadvantages, including environmental concerns, high costs, and the

potential disruption of soil microbial communities.

7

Statement of the Problem

The problem addressed in this research is the need to find an effective and

sustainable solution for neutralizing acidic soil. Specifically, the study aims to

investigate the potential of Lacatan Banana (Musa Acuminata) peel extract as a

pH level neutralizer for acidic soil, addressing the challenge of soil acidity that

can hinder agricultural productivity and environmental health.

1. What is the impact of Lacatan Banana (Musa Acuminata) peel extract

on neutralizing the pH levels of acidic soil in your experimental

study?

2. How does the application of Lacatan Banana (Musa Acuminata) peel

extract influence the chemical composition and nutrient availability

in the treated acidic soil?

3. Are there any significant changes in plant growth and health when

acidic soil is treated with Lacatan Banana (Musa Acuminata) peel

extract as compared to untreated acidic soil, and if so, what are the

observed differences?
8

Scope and Delimitation

The study investigates the chemical compositions of banana peel extract in different

soil conditions, focusing on Lacatan varieties. The research aims to understand the impact

of soil conditions on the extract's effectiveness and the types of soil under investigation.

The study explores the use of Lacatan banana peel extract as a pH-neutralizing agent for

soil improvement, avoiding other banana types and potential health risks. recognizing the

limitations and restrictions of the study on the use of Lacatan banana peel extract for acidic

soil pH neutralization. Future study that addresses these issues will help us gain a deeper

comprehension of the subject and its useful agricultural applications.

Significance of the Study

This study develops a remedy to mitigate the acidity of the soil, a study was carried

out. The majority of crops grown by farmers need neutral soil to thrive and develop. Crops

need the proper pH level to speed up growth significantly. Farm labor will be simpler and

more time-effective with a chemical that can quickly neutralize the soil. Farmers no longer

have to spend additional time preparing the soil for planting, freeing their time for other

tasks. Additionally, farmers will be able to save money for other needs since they won't

need to buy expensive or complicated instruments merely to prepare the land. This aims to

develop a soil acidity remedy for farmers, focusing on the importance of neutral soil for

crop growth. The solution simplifies farm labor, saves time, and allows farmers to save

money by avoiding expensive tools for soil preparation. Moreover, by offering an

experimental, environmentally friendly, and economically viable technique for enhancing

soil quality and lessening the negative consequences of soil acidity, this research has the
9

potential to address critical agricultural and environmental concerns. It can reduce waste

and encourage environmentally beneficial farming practices, which can benefit farmers,

communities, and ecosystems.

Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature

Banana Peel and their Potential uses

According to (Bubici et a., 2019). Lakatan Bananas (Musa Acuminata) Bananas, which are

the 5th most important commodity in the world, as well as being one of the most important

fruit crops, are known to be available worldwide and eaten for their various health benefits.

The sizes of bananas, which come in bunches of 6–8 bananas each, range from 15 to 23

centimetres. When a banana is ripe, its fairly thick, distinctive yellow peel will change from

a dark green to a yellow tint, then freckle with brown spots before turning entirely brown.

The banana skin covers and shields a semi-starchy, ivory-colored meat that is semi-ivory

in color. Banana peel is made up of water, fiber (30%), carbohydrates (about 60%), and a

small amount of protein and fat. The thick and high fiber content of banana skin makes it

tough and occasionally bitter, but it is still edible and rich in minerals like potassium and

manganese (Franklin-Cheung, 2022). Bananas are edible fruits that are grown from a

variety of large, herbaceous, flowering plants belonging to the genus Musa. The majority

of the complex carbohydrates found in bananas, including resistant starch, are beneficial

to your digestive system.

Lacatan banana peel extract has shown promise for soil pH neutralization,

particularly in acidic conditions. The extract from Lacatan banana peels, which is high in

organic compounds and nutrients, has alkaline properties. When applied to acidic soils, it

can effectively raise the pH level, thereby reducing acidity. A large quantity of banana (102

million tons of fresh fruit) is produced annually (FAOSTAT., 2012). The peel accounts for

about 35% of the whole fruit weight (Vu, Scarlett, & Vuong, 2016b), therefore
11

approximately 36 million tons of banana peel is generated every year and this is a potential

material for further utilization. However, most of the banana peel is usually discarded into

landfill or with general waste (Schieber, Stintzing, & Carle, 2001). The peel has been

traditionally used as medicinal material for the treatment of various ailments such as burns,

anemia, diarrhoea, ulcers, inflammation, diabetes, cough, snakebite, and excess

menstruation (Fries et al., 1950, Gore and Akolekar, 2003, Kumar et al., 2012, Pereira and

Maraschin, 2015). It has been found to contain high levels of dietary fibre and phenolic

compounds (Anjum, Sundaram, & Rai, 2014). Moreover, the material has been

demonstrated to exhibit potent antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial and antibiotic properties

(Chabuck et al., 2013, Fidrianny et al., 2014, Oliveira and Furlong,2008, Vijayakumar et

al., 2008) As such, it is a promising material for further applications in the nutraceutical

and pharmaceutical industries. the organic acids in banana peel extract act as natural

buffers, helping to balance soil acidity. Furthermore, the extract releases minerals and

nutrients into the soil, creating a more favourable environment for plant growth. This

natural pH adjustment method offers an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic

soil amendments. According to studies, Lacatan banana peel extract not only neutralizes

acidity but also improves soil fertility by increasing microbial activity.

The extract's organic components help to improve soil structure and water retention

capacity, resulting in a more favourable environment for plant roots. This sustainable and

cost-effective method of soil pH management demonstrates the potential of using

agricultural by-products to improve soil quality. However, more research and field trials

are required to determine the optimal application rates and long-term effects of Lacatan

banana peel extract on various soil types and crops. common yellow banana is called a
12

banana peel. Also becoming increasingly clear that soil is a limited resource on the scale

of a human life due to how slowly it recovers from damage (Camarsa et al., 2014; Lal,

2015; Jerry L. et al., 2022). Because of the importance of soils for the production of crops

and 8 livestock as well as for providing wider ecosystem services for local and global

societies, maintaining the soil in good condition is essential. To effectively manage the use

of agricultural soils and assess changes in soil quality and function, decision-makers

require tools that are based on science, easy to use, and affordable.

Phenolics are important secondary metabolites and are found in high levels in

banana peel compared to other fruits (Lim, Lim, & Tee, 2007). Phenolic compounds have

been linked with various health benefits, such as prevention of cardiovascular diseases,

cancer, diabetes and obesity (Boots et al., 2008, Cheng et al., 2007). They have been

effectively used as functional ingredients in foods as they can prevent lipid oxidation and

prevent moulds and bacterial growth (Aziz et al, 1997, Chen and Ho, 1997). Therefore,

recovery of these secondary metabolites from banana peel can generate functional

ingredients, and consequently add more value to the banana industry. To effectively

recover and utilise phenolic compounds from banana peel, it is necessary to understand its

chemical profile (especially individual phenolics), factors affecting the levels of phenolic

compounds in the peel, and potential use of these metabolites as food ingredients or

therapeutic agents. This review comprehensively highlights phenolic compounds which

have been identified from within the banana peel, reviews is traditional uses as food and

medicine, outlines the current applications of this by-product and finally proposes a trend

for future studies on banana peel.

13

The pH of the soil is influenced by the type of rock from which it was formed and

by the weathering process. Having the proper pH is crucial for a plant to grow healthily

because soil pH refers to the amount of nutrients it contains for the plant. However, it also

depends on the plants themselves, because some prefer acidic or alkaline soils. Different

nutrients and chemicals are present in soil at various pH levels. While others would only

be common in alkaline soils, some of these nutrients and chemicals are much more

frequently found in acidic soils. However, most nutrients are accessible when the pH of the

soil is neutral. have problems with zinc, copper, boron, and manganese deficiency and

likely have high levels of sodium. So having a correct balance of soil pH is significant for

a plant to grow properly.

(The State of Queensland, 2016). Legumes, like soybeans, alfalfa, and clovers, are

plants that are likely to cause soil pH levels to acidity. They have a tendency to soak up

more cations than anions, which then causes the H ions to be delivered out of plant roots

to perpetuate the electrochemical stability inside their tissues. The pH stage analyzed for

plant (fauna) nourishment varies amongst agricultural crops. The pH level reading for plant

(fauna) nourishment varies among agricultural crops. Few crops grow well in the 6–7 pH

level range (neutral), but there are also others that desire soil with slightly acidic conditions.

In addition to that, The Mosaic Company (2022) also stated that the variation of regions

contributes to the differences in soil properties that affect the need for and response to lime.

Management of soil pH for better crop harvest requires knowledge about the soil to be

planted upon. (The state of Queensland, 2022)

Farmers had a great reliance on soil because it is one of the necessary elements for

plants to grow well and yield a large crop. Soil and water were the two most important
14

natural nutrients for domesticated animals and plant-based food production systems during

the agricultural revolution. Agriculture resembles one of the innovations produced by

advanced humankind that spread quickly around the globe only 100 to 200 centuries ago

(Montgomery et al., 1995-2007; Jerry L. et al., 2022).

Discussion

Non-acidic soil is preferred in growing crops for it achieves greater yield.

Based on what we found in our experiment, our method of using Lacatan Banana

(Musa acuminata) peel extract to neutralize pH soil level shows little to no

significant difference in altering the pH level scale. Banana naturally contains an

important mineral called Potassium which is important for a plant, it is used by

farm owners and farmers to make plant growth more efficient hence acquiring

greater yield. In terms of neutralizing soil it is more effective to use methods such

as liming but also keep in mind about the negative impact it gives.

CHAPTER 5
Summary of Findings, Conclusion, and Recommendations

Summary of Findings

The objective of our study is to explore a safer, cheaper, and effective way

to neutralize soil. The impact of Lacatan Banana (Musa acuminata) peel extract

on neutralizing pH levels of acidic soil in our research did no significant changes

to the soil acidity. Our way of treating the soil is done by putting a measured

amount of banana peel extract on a soil with pure distilled water and left it to sit

for 30 min before testing the pH scale result. After doing a couple of experiment

we found out that the method we used might not work well in this situation. There

are factors that could be the reason for the unexpected result. An ineffective

extract, an unsuccessful treatment, a lack of necessary equipment, and limitations

in the manufacturing process.

Conclusion:

According to the experiment the researchers concluded that the use of

Banana peel could still be a potential to be a better alternative than pre existing

neutralizing agent if given the necessary tools, materials, and expertise. As we

consider the environmental challenges we face, the utilization of such natural

remedies not only benefits agriculture but also aligns with the principles of eco-

conscious practices. Further exploration and implementation of this natural

resource could pave the way for enhanced agricultural productivity and

environmental stewardship.
25

Recommendations

The Researchers believes that the study serves a through a useful

methods, a deeper study into classifying the Banana Peel Extract as a pH

Neutralizer. Along with the test Result and it’s own idea. The Researchers offer

the following Recommendations:

• The use of Lacatan banana can be processed by experts to be more

effective in terms of cost and and efficiency.

• Adding pre-existing agricultural additives to further enhance

effectiveness of the extract.

• Try different ways of processing Lacatan peel extract to see what works

best with soil.

• Think about how making a lot of Lacatan peel extract might impact the

environment and find eco-friendly ways to do it.

• Think about educating farmers and communities about how to use

Lacatan Peel Extract.

• Promote the use of natural ingredients because of its ability to be available

and safe for the environment.
