Heat Exchanger
Heat Exchanger
0 Introduction
1.1 Objective of the experiment
To determine the internal convective heat transfer coefficient and to verify if it falls within
the acceptable range.
1.2 Theoretical background
According to Bergman (2011) Convective heat transfer coefficient can be calculated which is
the rate of heat transfer between a solid surface and a fluid per unit surface area per unit
temperature difference. The convective heat transfer coefficient is not a property of the fluid
rather an experimentally determined value which depends on an object’s geometry, the nature
of the fluid motion. Dimension less numbers such Reynolds number and Nusselt’s number
can be used to determine the heat transfer coefficient. The Reynolds number is calculated
using the heat exchangers characteristic length, speed of the fluid, its density and the
viscosity of the fluid. Convection heat transfer correlations are used to determine the
Nusselt’s number which is directly proportional to the heat transfer coefficient.
With Parameters chosen at the film temperature the Reynolds number can be calculated using
the equation
𝐷ℎ 𝑢𝜌
𝑅𝑒 =
𝜇
To calculate the Nusselt’s number a suitable correlation must be selected and the basis for
that selection depends on the heat exchangers geometry, the type of flow of the fluid whether
it is external or internal flow and where it is laminar, transitional or tubular. an example of a
correlation that can be used to calculate the Nusselt’s number is
𝑁𝑢 𝐷 = 0.023𝑅𝑒 0.8 𝑃𝑟𝑛
A graph of the Reynolds number can be plotted against the Nusselt number and according to
Kawabata (2015) this what it yields
The internal convective heat transfer coefficient(hi) can be calculated using the equation.
