MELC 9: Predict the qualitative characteristics (orientation, type, and magnification) of images formed by plane
and curved mirrors and lenses.
Objective: 1. Discuss the property of reflection and property of refraction as it hits the material.

Concept Notes: When a ray of light approaches a smooth polished surface and the light ray bounces back, it is
called the reflection of light. The laws of reflection determine the reflection of incident light rays on reflecting
surfaces, like mirrors, smooth metal surfaces, and clear water. Let’s consider a plane mirror as shown in the figure
above. The law of reflection states that: (1) The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal all lie in the same
plane; (2)The angle of incidence = Angle of reflection. Refraction is the phenomenon that takes place due to the
bending of light when it travels from one medium to another. When light travels from air into glass, the light slows
down and changes direction slightly. When light travels from a less dense substance to a denser substance, the
refracted light bends more toward the normal line. If the light wave approaches the boundary in a perpendicular
direction, the light ray doesn’t refract despite the change in speed.

Objective: 1. Compare the distance, height, and lateral view of the object to the image formed by the plane
mirror.
General Instructions:
1. Find a classmate approximately the same as your height. You will act as an object and your partner will
act as an image.
2. Put the stick on the floor. It will serve as the reference line (position of the imaginary mirror) from both
object and image.
3. With your partner, stand each other face to face from the reference line or the stick on the floor and
move two steps backward.
4. In your position, the object will do the following actions: Note: Whatever the object’s action, the image
should also do the same action.

Concept Notes: Radio is sound communication by radio waves, usually through the transmission of music, news,
and other types of programs from single broadcast stations to multitudes of individual listeners equipped with radio
receivers. In radio communication systems, information is carried across space using radio waves. At the sending
end, the information to be sent is converted by some type of transducer to a time-varying electrical signal called
the modulation signal.

Objectives: 1. Differentiate ionizing from non-ionizing radiation.

3. Identify some biological effects of exposure to radiation.

Concept Notes: Radiation is a means of transferring energy. It can occur naturally or be man-made and it has
been around us throughout our evolution. Some types of electromagnetic (EM) radiation pose a certain degree of
risk and danger to people and the environment. Some are used in the medical field for diagnosis and treatments.
Our bodies are designed to deal with the low levels we are exposed to every day. There are two types: Non-
ionizing radiation, which includes radio waves, cell phones, microwaves, infrared radiation, and visible light •
Ionizing radiation, which includes ultraviolet radiation, radon, x-rays, and gamma rays. Energy absorbed from
non-ionizing radiation speeds up the movement of atoms and molecules, which is equivalent to heating the sample.
Although biological systems are sensitive to heat (as we might know from touching a hot stove or spending a day
at the beach in the sun), a large amount of non-ionizing radiation is necessary before dangerous levels are reached.
Ionizing radiation, however, may cause much more severe damage by breaking bonds or removing electrons in
biological molecules, disrupting their structure and function. Radiation can harm either the whole body (somatic
damage) or eggs and sperm (genetic damage). It can change the structure of the DNA molecule, which can lead
to cancer. On the other hand, radiation-induced mutation can also bring benefits: high-yielding and disease-
resistant strains of rice, corn, beans, mongo, and other agricultural crops and sterile breeds of rats and other pests.
Illustrations: The symbol is called Trefoil and known as an international sign used to indicate
(1) radioactive sources, (2) containers for radioactive materials, and (3) areas
where radioactive materials are stored and used. The presence of this symbol (a
magenta or black propeller on a yellow background) on a sign denotes the need
for caution to avoid contamination with or undue exposure to atomic radiation.
