QUIZ 2

Advanced Mechanics of Materials - Composites

(Total Marks = 24)

1. What is the definition of a true composite material?(1 mark)

Ans: A material that is made by combining two distinct materials with different physical and
chemical properties to attain a material with enhanced properties to attain some special pre-
defined characteristics is known as a composite material. For example: Aerospace
components, automotive components, fiberglass, and many more.

2. Identify the parameters that dictate the performance of the fabricated composite. (6 marks )
a) Physical, chemical, and mechanical properties.
b) Tensile properties of material
c) Fiber volume fraction and fiber orientation
d) The strength and quality of the bond
e) The presence of void or air pockets
f) Environmental factors
g) Design considerations
h) Comprehensive testing and characterization
By considering all of these parameters carefully throughout the composite fabrication
process, engineers and manufacturers are very much able to optimize material
performance, durability, and reliability for a wide range of applications across industries
such as aerospace, automotive, construction, and many more.

3. Identify (with a brief explanation) the possible nature of outcomes of combining different
materials for fabrication of composites (6 mark)

When we combine two or more materials to attain a specific composite material, the outcome
varies significantly depending upon various properties of the material like: chemical & tensile
properties, strength and thermal properties of individual materials, and sudden change after
their bonding, synergizing between the materials and several individual and combined
properties. Whenever a composite is formed, observations, calculations, and processes are
taken out very carefully so that the new material comes out with the best of individual and
combined properties so it is comprehended for the purpose. One of the most important
outcomes are:

a. Summation for Enhanced Properties: In terms of physical, chemical & mechanical

properties.
b. Required Thermal Properties: It is very important to attain the required thermal
properties to withstand the system material is manufactured for. The material should be
engineered to withstand various thermal properties.
c. Complementation & Chemical Resistance: While combining two or more materials
various chemical resistance properties are taken into account such as moisture,
chemicals, and corrosion can result in composites with enhanced chemical resistance
and durability.
d. Weight Characteristics: It is very important to attain a specific weight so that the new
component fits perfectly into manufacturing. Incorporating lightweight materials, such
as carbon fibers or microspheres, into a composite matrix can result in weight reduction
compared to traditional materials such as metals or alloys.
e. Cost-Efficiency and Sustainability: Depending on the availability and cost of raw
materials, as well as the fabrication processes involved, combining different materials
for composite fabrication can offer cost-efficient solutions compared to traditional
materials or monolithic structures. Additionally, utilizing recycled or bio-based
materials in composite fabrication can enhance sustainability and environmental
friendliness, contributing to green initiatives and circular economy principles.
4. What are the selection criteria for organic resins as the matrix material? (7 marks)

selection criteria for organic resins are given below;

1. Viscosity and pot life during impregnation
2. Wetability to filaments
3. Processing and /or curing temperature and pressure
4. Shrinkage during curing
5. Liberation of volatiles in processing and /or curing
6. Toxicity
7. Shelf life for pre-impregnation

5. Identify three main selection criteria for fibres (Primary requirements) (3 marks)

The selection criteria for fibres are;

1. Strength, high strength fibres are usually selected,
2. Stiffness, fibre of high modulus of elasticity is preferred,
3. Density, lower densities are preferred

6. What do you classify a composite made of titanium and alumina fibre (1 mark)

A composite made of titanium and alumina fibers can be classified as a metal matrix composite
(MMC) because titanium is used as the matrix material and alumina fibers are used as
reinforcement. Metal matrix composites provide a unique combination of the properties of the
metal matrix and reinforcing fibers. They are generally known for their strength-to-weight ratio,
good thermal conductivity, and high wear resistance compared to steel materials. MMC has
applications in aerospace, automotive and other industries that require heavy-duty materials with
excellent properties.
