Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Thank You!

November 6, 2011

LifeSource and the Christ the King Knights of Columbus would like to thank the following donors for their participation in the Blood Drive held on October 16th. Twenty eight units were donated. This means about 84 lives were saved!

Stewardship Prayer
PRAYER FOR GENEROSITY Lord Jesus, You came to tell us that the meaning of life consists in giving. You told us that those who cling too tightly to what they have, without thought for You or others, end up losing everything. You gave us new values by which to measure the worth of a person's life. Help us to realize it is not temporal success or riches or fame that gives life meaning. Rather it is the service rendered to You and others that brings fulfillment and makes our lives worthwhile. May all of our activity help to build Gods kingdom; Our obedience to bring true freedom, Our generosity to increase love, Our sacrifices to bear generous fruit, Our deaths to lead to eternal life. Amen

Stewardship Appeal
Our stewardship appeal is in November. Please prayerfully plan your giving by renewing and, if possible, increasing your financial commitment to our parish this coming year. We are asking if you will commit to a few dollars more from last commitment. We have three envelopes in which we ask your support. The white envelopes fund general expense, while green and gold are restricted funds that support specific needs of our mortgage and capital improvements. No amount is too small and your generosity is most appreciated. You will also receive a letter from Father Peter along with a stewardship pledge card in November. Please complete and return the pledge card and pace in the offertory collection or if preferred you may mail or drop off at the rectory. We again thank you for your generous support to our parish. Your financial contributions, and the time and talent that so many of you share with our parish community, are greatly appreciated. Please spread the word of your church to your neighbors and friends, new parishioners are always welcome at Christ the King. Again, thank you. Christ the King Finance Committee, Rick Cosenza, Lori Bhardwaj, Brian Carnahan, Elaine Ward

Mary is explained as an on-going presence, an actor in the life of the Church. November 16, 2011 Week 5: The Indispensable Men - Peter, Paul and the Missionary Adventure Father Barron calls Peter and Paul two indispensable men, the ones without whom the Church never would have emerged and survived. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again!

One of the changes in the liturgy introduced by the Second Vatican Council was the insertion of the Memorial Acclamation after the consecration of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ during the Eucharistic Prayer. There are four different forms of this acclamation that we currently use. An acclamation is addressed to someone. At this moment in the Eucharistic Prayer, just after the priest has prayed the words of Jesus at the Last Supper and the bread and wine have been changed through the power of the Holy Spirit into the Body and Blood of Christ, we address our acclamation to the Lord who is present with us. These acclamations are prayers in which we, responding to the invitation of the priest, state our belief in the saving action of our Lord. We acclaim our belief that Jesus' death and resurrection was a saving event for us. Through the celebration of the Mass and the reception of the Lord in Communion, we participate in this saving work of the Lord. These memorial acclamations also are a plea that we will finally be saved from this life and come to share eternal life with the Lord in heaven. In the original Latin text of the Mass, there are three memorial acclamations. The one that is most familiar to us, "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again," does not have a Latin equivalent in the original text. Furthermore, unlike the other three memorial acclamations that are currently available to us, "Christ has died..." is more of a statement than a prayer. The other three memorial acclamations either directly address the Lord or imply that we are addressing the Lord. Consequently, when the new translation of the Mass is introduced the first Sunday of Advent (November 27), the option to use "Christ has died..." will not be there. We will still pray the memorial acclamation using one of the other three options newly translated to more closely convey the meaning of the original Latin. This does not mean that our use of the familiar "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again," was somehow wrong. In the effort to translate the Mass from Latin to English in the days following the Vatican Council, those charged with this task created this acclamation with good intention and careful thought. It was approved by Rome. Today, with 47 years of praying the Mass and an ever growing appreciation of the vision of the council fathers for the celebration of Mass, we come to a new understanding. As in so many aspects of our faith lives, we continue to grow and, in growing, gracefully let go of those ways of praying and living that have sustained us as deeper and richer awareness and insight bid us to move forward. Gracefully surrendering things of the past opens us up to receive anew the promise of the future.

Christ The King Early Learning Academy Update

We are having a very busy fall at the Academy! Autumn is finally here with the cooler weather and the beautiful changing colors of the leaves! We are surprised at how quickly the children are learning their prayers and routines! One thing we have been focusing on if how to take care of each other, just like Jesus takes care of us! Fr. Peter has also talked about this when kindergarten went to Mass during the week. In an effort to move forward with our waiting list at the Academy for the past three years we have begun plans for an additional preschool classroom. Both the Diocese of Joliet and the Academy want to increase enrollment to meet the needs of the community to uphold our mission. Our unique environment allows us to have an easy transition to accomplish this. We plan to have an additional preschool classroom available for Catholic Schools week when we open registration to the public or sooner if possible. Although the additional class would be formed for the next school year with teachers and students, the classroom would be used for smaller group activities. Fr. Peter, parishioners, staff and our families have made this become a reality for us! We have very resourceful staff and the kindness of others to help us create this additional classroom. Each and every one of our staff continues to be dedicated to our mission and philosophy in a Christ -centered learning environment! This is more than just a job, this is a calling! A calling to serve those in need: The children and their families. Our staff make a difference in the lives of the children and therefore add to the ministry of Christ the King parish. Our school continues to be very diverse. Diverse not only in culture, but in faith as well. We celebrate the diversity every chance we get! What a wonderful way to be a servant of the Lord, God bless, Mrs. Placey

Life Matters: To the End of Our Day

Some of our most challenging moral decisions come in the final months and even hours of life, as we navigate the complex issues of nurturing life and respecting the dignity of the human person. Advances in medical science have made it possible to extend life, even for those with incurable illnesses. In times past, many of these conditions would have resulted in death much sooner. How we deal with persons in the last stages of life, when they may be completely dependent on others, says a great deal about the kind of society we live in and the kind of persons we are.
Withholding nutrition or hydration in order to bring about a persons death by starvation and dehydration is contrary to the dignity of the person and his or her right to life. We should be careful that living wills or any advance directives do not contain broadly worded directions to withhold such basic care. A person certainly does have the right to refuse treatment that is unduly burdensome and offers little benefit and little hope of recovery. In such a case, a person can make a good moral choice in conscience to refuse such a treatment. Food and fluids, however, are not considered medical treatment, but normal care given to any human being. True compassion leads to sharing anothers pain; it does not kill the person whose suffering we cannot bear. (The Gospel of Life, no. 65)
