Brief History of Municipality of Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental

The name TAGOLOAN was a product of a priest’s curiosity and interest to

seek the very source of a river which when flooded caused death of human and animals and
destruction of properties. It is told that after a week of climbing the hills and mountains on
foot and by horse he finally came upon his goal. He found the wellspring under a big rock
and so hidden as to defy discovery. The priest called it TAGO-OLOHAN, which means
CONCEALED SOURCE, from “Tago” (concealed), and “OLOHAN” (source). Later
especially the Spaniards changed this to the present name probable due to the difficulty of
pronouncing the word.

Another vision of the legend of Tagoloan is that it originated from Moslem

words, namely “tago” meaning “a place” and “oloan” meaning “head: or “chief”. Tagoloan
therefore means “the place of the chief”.

By whatever legend Tagoloan got its name, today it is considered the: Home
of the Tigers” owing to the disciplined people living in the municipality.

In terms of land area, previously, the municipality included Villanueva

towards the north, malitbog towards the east and barangays of Tablon, Agusan, Puerto, and
Bugo towards the west. However after a series of laws creating the municipalities of
Villanueva and Malitbog, the making of Cagayan De Oro a Chartered City, the boundaries of
Tagoloan were finally established along the Ala-e River towards the South and East, the
Tagpayao River towards the North and the Macalajar Bay towards the West.

With these fixed boundaries, the land area of Tagoloan had shrunk to only
7,938.9035 hectares. And yet this greatly shrunken land area still suffered further attrition by
Presidential Decree (P.D.) 538 which created the Phividec Industiral Estate in the later part of
1974 and set aside some 1,558.4000 hectares of prime and coastal land areas for its
multinational clientele.

That declaration of part of Tagoloan as area for Phividec Industrial Estate

paved the way for the industrialization of the municipality.

Thus Tagoloan shall maintain her role as the heart and hub of industrialization
of Misamis Oriental and the Cagayan-Iligan Corridor stretch. Together with its adjacent
municipal-neighbor Villanueva, Tagoloan shall also strengthen its role as the regional
industrial center of Northern Mindanao (Region X).
At present, Tagoloan is a 1st class according in income class municipality in
the province of Misamis Oriental and the first municipality east of Misamis Oriental . It is
South of Cagayan de Oro City and East of Malitbog, Bukidnon. It is about 19 kilometers
from the provincial capital of Cagayan de Oro City. It is residential and industrial
municipality, it has 6 High schools, 1 college, and 2 hospitals. Tagoloan uses the zip code
9001 based on the List of Philippine Zip Codes and has 28,064 registered voters on 2010 with
a latest total population of 90,226 as of 2021.

The municipality of Tagoloan is divided into ten barangays, namely:

Poblacion, Baluarte, Casinglot. Sta Ana, Sta Cruz, Mohon, Sugbongcogon, Rosario, Gracia,
and Natumolan and has total land area of 7,938 hectares represents 2.24 percent of Misamis
Oriental’s total area of 354,770 hectares.

Among the barangays, Sta Ana is the largest, comprising 37 percent of the
municipality’s land area. Barangays Rosario, which includes contested areas between
Municipality of Tagoloan and Municipality of Malitbog, Bukidnon and Sta Cruz, occupy
relatively bigger areas (11.2%) than the other nine barangays. The Gross Population Density
of Tagoloan in 2004 is 650 persons per square kilometer.

The land area of Tagoloan is suitable for six major uses, which include
protection forest, plantation forest, rice, tree and vine, pasture and cultivated crops. About
2,405 hectares or 30 percent of Tagoloan’s total area are suitable for forest uses. Riceland is
suitable for 2,199 hectares or about 28 percent, while the cultivation of annual crops are
suited for 2,024 hectares or about 25 percent. Tagoloan River that is located beside Barangay
Poblacion is the 13th largest river system in the Philippines.
