ENEE408I - Task Document
Spring 2024
A long time ago, in a workshop not so far away, the greatest minds of the
engineering alliance assembled for a trial of ingenuity and programming
that echoes the legendary challenges faced by heroes of the galaxy.
The epic begins as three droids, much like a trio of X-wing fighters
preparing for battle, stand ready at the white square, their starting point.
The first droid embarks on a journey akin to the daring flights through
Coruscant, navigating the Line of the Republic with a steady and
unwavering resolve.
Ahead lies the labyrinthine 6x6 grid, the Maze of Mandalore, where the
trio must work in harmony, collecting RGB code artifacts at key vertices,
as precious and significant as the Holocrons of Jedi lore. The knowledge
gathered is as crucial as the transmissions sent by rebel spies, and must
be communicated back to the main computer, the heart of the Resistance.
Beyond the maze, only one droid, the chosen one, will continue the quest.
This brave soul will face the Kessel Run, a treacherous path of winding
dotted lines resembling the unpredictable spirals of nebulas and the
weaving flight paths through asteroid fields. This challenge requires the
precision of an ace pilot, dodging the unseen dangers of deep space.
From there, it's onto the Hoth Asteroid Field, a straight path fraught with
obstacles, reminiscent of the Millennium Falcon's desperate escape from
Imperial pursuit, with asteroids threatening at every turn. Our solo droid
must maneuver with the skill and sharp reflexes of the galaxy's finest
smuggler to navigate through unscathed.
Then comes the Path of Dual Fates, where the sound of destiny calls from
one of two paths, much like the Force calling to a young Jedi. The droid
must choose wisely, as only one path carries the beacon of success, much
like the crucial decision that faces a Jedi Knight.
The final challenge, the Endor Dash, requires the droid to descend without
the guidance of the line, relying solely on its encoders and inertial
measurement unit, much like a Rebel pilot trusting their instincts more
than their instruments to evade the Empire's grasp.
This document outlines the journey ahead, a challenge that will test not
only the droids' abilities but the strategic thinking and ingenuity of their
creators. May the Force be with each team as they navigate this celestial
trial.
Task Summary
Each team will have 3 robots which they can use to complete the task.
Sections are divided by white squares that measure 12"x12"inches.
Teams can choose to use one/two/three robots to complete the task.
Only one robot has to get to the final square to complete the task.
Robots can communicate with each other/ with a main computer.
There will be an overhead camera which can be used for the completion of some
sections.
Robots have to start from the start square.
In the first section of the maze (Line of the Republic), robots must follow a straight
line from the start square and proceed to the next square which marks the start of
the next section.
The robots will then navigate a 6x6 maze (Maze of Mandalore) that features some
vertices with cubes in three colors: red, green, and blue. They must identify and tally
the cubes by color without colliding with them.
Upon successfully navigating the maze, the robot(s) will advance to a section
marked by a dashed line that with varying curvature (Kessel Run). The robot(s) are
required to precisely follow this sinuous line to reach the subsequent section's
starting square.
In the subsequent section, the robot(s) will encounter a path defined by a dashed
line, interspersed with obstacles (Hoth Asteroid Field). They must adeptly maneuver
around these obstacles to reach the square that marks the entry to the next section.
In the next section, robots will have to localize a sound source and proceed along
the path which is closest to the sound source.
In the following section, the robot(s) are tasked with identifying the location of a
sound source. They must then choose and traverse the path that lies closest to this
source of sound (Path of Dual fates).
The final challenge for the robot(s) is to navigate from their current position to the
final square without the aid of any guiding lines (Endor Dash).
We will proceed to outline the arena that has been designated for the task, detailing the
individual sections as highlighted in the brief description provided earlier.
