The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act is to ensure citizens are informed, very essential to a
functional democratic society. Before it’s passed into a law, this draft bill is a result of a
consultative process conducted by an administration study group after careful study of similar
legislation in order to balance the government’s legitimate needs for secrecy with the public’s
right to know. This was the integral element of the Aquino Good Governance and Anti-
Corruption Plan of 2012-2016. This plan lays out reforms and initiatives that pursue greater
transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in governance. FOI data is available

Biodiversity and its Threats

Biodiversity is all the different kinds of life you’ll find in
one area—the variety of animals, plants, fungi, and
even microorganisms like bacteria that make up our
natural world. Each of these species and organisms
work together in ecosystems, like an intricate web, to
maintain balance and support life. Biodiversity
supports everything in nature that we need to survive:
food, clean water, medicine, and shelter.
isbiodiversity). In Figure 2, are the biggest threats to
biodiversity that can shaped the population’ structure
of species and can be searched through
https://www.bioexplorer.net/threats-
tobiodiversity.html/

Task 4

1. Read the ―Threats to Biodiversity‖

2. Make a graphic organizer that pertains to
major threats to biodiversity identified by
United Nation’s Environment Programme.
3. Assign the examples in each threat found
inside the box below.

Figure 2. Biggest Threat to Biodiversity

Genetically
Modified Organisms

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in

figure 3, are produced using scientific methods that
include recombinant DNA technology and reproductive
cloning. In reproductive cloning, a nucleus is extracted
from a cell of the individual to be cloned and is inserted
into the enucleated cytoplasm of a host egg (an
enucleated egg is an egg cell that has had its own nucleus
removed). The process results in the generation of an
offspring that is genetically identical to the donor
individual. The first animal produced by means of this
cloning technique with a nucleus from an adult donor cell
(as opposed to a donor embryo) was a sheep named
Dolly, born in 1996. Since then a number of other animals,
including pigs, horses, and dogs, have been generated
by reproductive cloning technology.
Recombinant DNA technology, on the other hand,
involves the insertion of one or more individual genes
from an organism of one species into
the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) of another. Whole-genome Figure 3. GMO method
replacement, involving the transplantation of one bacterial
genome into the ―cell body,‖ or cytoplasm, of another microorganism, has been reported,
although this technology is still limited to basic scientific applications.

Task 6: Video Critiquing

Critique on the movie entitled “X-Men The Last Stand” infer your stand on the current modified species
and how it impact to the science fiction of Hi-breed humans? You may visit the link https://www.youtube.
com/watch?v=0q1Nh_p6bKM
(answer)
"X-Men: The Last Stand" presents a gripping narrative that delves into the intricate complexities of
genetic modification and its profound impact on society. Through its compelling storyline and well-developed
characters, the movie prompts viewers to contemplate the ethical implications of tampering with human DNA. The
emergence of a "cure" for mutation serves as a focal point for exploring themes of discrimination, identity, and the
right to choose one's genetic destiny. As mutants grapple with the decision to embrace or reject the cure, the film
challenges audiences to consider the consequences of eradicating genetic differences and the potential dangers of
homogenizing the human race.

Furthermore, "X-Men: The Last Stand" contributes to the science fiction genre by offering a nuanced
portrayal of hybrid humans and their place in society. The depiction of characters with enhanced abilities blurs the
lines between natural and artificial, raising thought-provoking questions about what it means to be human. By
exploring the tensions between mutants and humans, the film highlights the importance of acceptance, tolerance,
and embracing diversity. Ultimately, it serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of genetic manipulation and the
need for ethical consideration in the pursuit of scientific advancement.

SELF-EVALUATION:
1. What is an information Age?

The Information Age refers to a period in human history characterized by the

widespread use of digital technology and the rapid exchange of information. It is marked by the
transition from traditional industry to an economy based on information and communication
technologies (ICT). During this era, access to information became easier and faster than ever
before, revolutionizing various aspects of society, including communication, education,
commerce, and entertainment. The Information Age has led to increased globalization,
interconnectedness, and the emergence of new industries centered around data and
technology.

2. Why Information age is considered as Digital Age and the new media Age?

The Information Age is often dubbed the Digital Age and the New Media Age due to its
heavy reliance on digital technology and the proliferation of new forms of media. In this era,
digital technology plays a central role in the creation, storage, processing, and dissemination of
information, revolutionizing how we interact with data. The emergence of new media channels,
such as online news outlets, social media platforms, and digital publications, has transformed
the landscape of information consumption and communication.

3. How do you infer the statements “You are what you eat and so is your brain. Do not draw
conclusions unless all ideas and information are presented to you”? Explain.
The statement "You are what you eat and so is your brain" underscores the vital
connection between diet and both physical and cognitive health, suggesting that the food we
consume profoundly influences not only our bodily well-being but also the functioning of our
brain. It highlights the significance of nourishing our bodies with nutritious foods rich in essential
nutrients to support optimal brain function and mental well-being. Additionally, the admonition
"Do not draw conclusions unless all ideas and information are presented to you" advocates for
critical thinking and open-mindedness, advising against premature judgment or forming
conclusions without considering all available evidence and perspectives. This stance promotes
intellectual humility and encourages individuals to approach information with skepticism, seek
out diverse viewpoints, and engage in informed decision-making processes.

4. If species A is a producer, and b is a primary consumer, then Species c is secondary consumer

and it so happened that Species D is introduced in an ecosystem? How this introduce species
become a threat to the balanced of endemic( native species)?

The introduction of species D into an ecosystem where species A functions as a

producer, species B as a primary consumer, and species C as a secondary consumer can
profoundly disrupt the balance of endemic species. As a new addition to the ecosystem, species
D may compete with native species for vital resources such as food, shelter, and nesting sites,
leading to resource depletion and habitat degradation.
.
5. How does sustainable development in biodiversity become compromised with respect to
carrying capacity?

Sustainable development in biodiversity can become compromised when human

activities exceed the carrying capacity of ecosystems. Carrying capacity refers to the maximum
population size of a species that an ecosystem can sustainably support over the long term
without causing degradation to the ecosystem. When human activities, such as overexploitation
of natural resources, habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change, surpass the ecosystem's
carrying capacity, it can lead to various negative consequences for biodiversity and ecosystem
health. For example, overfishing can deplete fish stocks beyond their natural replenishment
rate, leading to population crashes and disrupting marine ecosystems' balance.

6. How biodiversity become essential in your life as a student or after finding a job later or
sooner? You may visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bk2nnDI68g. Do you have a
pledge? Then what is it?

Biodiversity plays a crucial role in my life both as a student and in my future career. As a
student, biodiversity enriches my learning experience by providing a diverse array of
ecosystems, species, and ecological interactions to study and understand. It allows me to
appreciate the complexity and beauty of the natural world and fosters a sense of curiosity and
wonder. Additionally, biodiversity provides essential ecosystem services such as clean air, water,
and soil, which directly contribute to my health and well-being.
