Marking Scheme
Markers are advised that, unless a task specifies that an answer be provided in a particular
form, then an answer that is correct (factually or in practical terms) must be given the
available marks. If there is doubt as to the correctness of an answer, the relevant NCC
Education materials should be the first authority.

This marking scheme has been prepared as a guide only to markers and there will
frequently be many alternative responses which will provide a valid answer.

Each candidate’s script must be fully annotated with the marker’s comments (where
applicable) and the marks allocated for each part of the tasks.

Throughout the marking, please credit any valid alternative point.

Where markers award half marks in any part of a task, they should ensure that the
total mark recorded for the task is rounded up to a whole mark.

1 Microsoft Windows installation lab report

Within the lab session there are four assessed practical


activities. Each should be written up, with marks allocated as
follows.

Install Windows: Report on the installation of Microsoft 12


Windows. There is a description of the installation process
with supporting pictures, covering the following issues:

a. Identification of key stages in the installation (3 marks)


b. Identification and description of required device drivers and
their source locations (5 marks)
c. Identification and description of unresolved issues –
especially missing device drivers (4 marks)

Antivirus software: Annotated evidence is presented of the 10


successful installation of an appropriate antivirus package.
Screenshots of installation and of the package working are
present. The following issues are covered:

a. Identification of product used (2 marks)


b. Identification and description of key stages in installation (3
marks)
c. Identification and description of problems and unresolved
issues (2 marks)
d. Outline of the update process for the antivirus software (3
marks)

Office package: Annotated evidence is presented of the 7


successful installation of an appropriate office package.
Screenshots of installation and of the package working are
present. The following issues are covered:

a. Identification of product used (2 marks)

installation of an appropriate free package. Screenshots of
installation and of the package working are present. The
following issues are covered:

a. Identification of utility, outline of what it does and reason


why you chose this (make it different from that of your
classmates) (5 marks)
b. Identification and description of key stages in installation (3
marks)
c. Identification and description of problems and unresolved
issues (3 marks)

2 Linux installation lab report

Within the lab session there are two assessed practical


activities. Each should be written up, with marks allocated as
follows.

Install Linux: Report on the installation of any suitable Linux 30


distribution. There is a description of the installation process
with supporting pictures. The following issues are covered:

a. Identification of distribution (2 marks)


b. Description of disk partitioning (e.g. partition options,
partition size) (6 marks)
c. Identification and description of required device drivers and
their source locations (6 marks)
d. Description of setting up administrator and standard user
(5 marks)
e. Description of network set-up (5 marks)
f. Identification and description of installation process for one
application (6 marks)

Testing of Linux System: A test plan is presented which is 10


completed to show the testing of the Linux system. This
should include:

a. Tests to perform (i.e. actions or inputs to use) (2 marks)


b. Expected results (2 marks)
c. Actual results (2 marks)
d. Explanation of results (2 marks)
e. Actions if results do not match expectation (2 marks)

PC faults repaired. Therefore, for each system, the following
should be covered and marks are allocated for the proper
coverage of the fault diagnosis and repair process.

b. The cause of the fault (5 marks)
c. The steps taken to remedy the fault (5 marks)
d. The success or failure of the repair (5 marks) 20
