Module 3: Lesson 1: Psychosocial Perspectives on Gender
Topic 1 – Activity
Answer the following questions:
1) What 3 words describe me as a man/woman?
The words diligent, compassionate, and faithful sum up who I am as a woman the most. I
considered myself to be a diligent woman because I had grown accustomed to following my
parents' instructions ever since I was nine years old. I happily complete the tasks around the
house, and I work extremely hard in school. I think that working hard at something makes me
happy in life. When it comes to doing what I love and showing compassion to the people I love, I
am also compassionate. Finally, I am faithful because I think that everyone should cultivate
integrity, not just women but also men.
2) Who have been the major socializing agents which informed me about the notions of
gender?
Mostly, my parents are the ones who informed me about the notions of gender because I
live with them every day, which is why I was able to adopt how genders are portrayed.
3) How have gender definitions affected my life in terms of my behavior, choices, identity &
roles?
Actually, I spent my childhood playing with my male cousins. So even though there are
some restrictions on how genders should be represented, I still engage in challenging gender
norms. When it comes to my options, I don't actually place any restrictions on myself as long as
they make sense for me and provide me a sense of security.
4) Have I personally experience gender bias? Relay the experience.

Yes, during my junior year of high school. Our SSG adviser prefers that the president be
a man when it comes to leadership because men are already experienced with electricity and
carpentry, whereas women are not. It does not, however, prevent me from leading. I'm still able
to perform my duties.
Topic 2 - Activity
Provide 5 examples of each:
(1)Stereotypes
1. When faced with struggles, it is normal for women to cry, while for men, it’s not.
2. Men are for cooking, while women are for cleaning.
3. Women are too sensitive to other people’s feelings, while men are less sensitive to other
people’s feelings.
4. Women express themselves through words, whereas men express themselves through
actions.
5. Men are less creative compared to women.
(2) Prejudice
1. Aen doesn’t listen to Muslim people. When she overhears a Muslim speaking, she simply
walks away and ignores them because Muslims allow men to marry as many women as they
want as long as they can provide for their needs.
2. Cuyunon people are very noisy people, which is why those who speak Tagalog hate to
hear their voices.
3. Men who are not manly in action are gay.
4. Women that are not feminine in action are lesbians.
5. Since the clan of the Sandoval family is known to be gossipers, no one listens to them.

1. Look for TV or newspaper ads which you think are promoting stereotypes, prejudice or
discrimination.
2. Copy-paste your chosen ad.
3. Write down an essay explaining:
• Why the ad is promoting stereotypes, prejudice and/or discrimination.
• How do you think the said ad can be made more inclusive.
Allowed to work during the 1800s and 1900s were only men. Due to the lack of working-
related rights for women, few of them were able to find employment in the past, leaving most of
them to be housewives. They do nothing but wait for their husband to get home. The only thing
left to do is make their husband dinner. The bias I've noticed here is that when it comes to the
workplace, men and women should be treated equally. Both men and women are creative. We
should not only limit the capacity of women. It does not stop them from being a housewife, a
cook, and a cleaner, but they also deserve to work another job outside their comfort zone.
Because they will be having dinner together, it is clear from the advertisement that the
woman is likely married and waiting for her husband to get home. I think this ad can be made
inclusive; terms for both genders, male and female, should be in the advertisement so that we
wouldn't think that women are solely for housework and that men are the only ones who work
outside.
Topic 3 - Activity
Read a news clip / article and try to deconstruct the written words into gender sensitive and
empowering language.
Differences Between Men and Women
There are some words used to represent sexism in gender representation, just like the
word "man," which refers to both men and women.

Men are always considered to be strong and firm, whereas women are the opposite of
men. This article has taught me about men's and women's prejudices. We shouldn't imply that
asking for information from someone makes you weak or a failure, especially if you genuinely
don't know anything.
I've also realized that before engaging in an argument that we believe is sensitive enough
for both parties, we should be cautious about what we say out loud.
