INTRODUCTION TO THE ARCHETYPAL

EXERCISE GUIDE

Congratulations for completing the Deluxe Archet ype Repor t!

To fur ther enhance your learning experience of what you’ve just read,
the Archet ypal Exercise Guide is designed to help you process all of
the information that you’ve just absorbed, and allow you to put
ever ything into ac tion.

The contents of the Deluxe Archet ype Repor t might seem a little bit
puzzling. But do not be alarmed, because ever ything will be explained
clearly here and translated into ac tionable steps in the form of useful
exercises. At this junc ture, you have been introduced to your a r c h e -
t ype, a holistic and complete breakdown of your personalit y profile. I n
your free archet ypal reading, you were introduced to who you are. I n
the Deluxe Archet ype Repor t, you are introduced to who you have the
potential to become.

Now that you’ve been exposed to the entire spec trum of I ndividuation,
and now that your true potential has been revealed to you, it is now
time for you to selec t your path. I n the Deluxe Archet ype Repor t, we
discussed the 4 Archet ypal Stages of Life. The Athlete Stage, The W a r -
rior Stage, The Statement Stage, and The Stage O f The Spirit.

O f course, achieving each of thost stages is heavily dependent on the

individual, which means that it would be difficult to guide you
through each of those stages purely through books. Especially since
that the journey is intended to last an entire lifetime.

That being said, the exercises found in The Archet ypal Exercise Guide
are intended to prepare you for the different stages of life, and grant
you the enlightenment that you need to embark on that journey with
poise and confidence. Now, let us move on to the first of the Archet ypal
Exercises!

As mentioned in the Deluxe Archet ype Repor t, we all star t out as par t
of a collec tive. As we grow, our family, friends, school, religion, and
culture shape our personalities. This is best illustrated by the term
“the acquired mind”, as coined by the Taoists – who believes that our
personalities are acquired through the various envionrments that we
experience.

What we can understand from this is that the environment tends to be

conventional – specifically in the sense of its rules, expec tations, and
conventions. There is an underlying “code” that presents ver y specific
guidelines of how we should ac t, what cer tain things mean, what we
should believe in, and how we should process this information. This
ex ternal world, the environment, has been carefully construc ted with
proper struc ture and order.

However, within the spec trum of our mind, body, and soul, lies
an entirely different world. An inner world that ’s filled with chaos, u n c er-
taint y, and fear. Both Freud and Jung called this undifferentiated chaos
the unconscious. The unconscious, we could say, is ever ything within
us that falls outside of our conscious awareness— ever ything we don’t
k now or can’t obser ve within ourselves.

While we want to believe we’re conscious of most of our thoughts,

feelings, ac tions, and behavior, all evidence suggests other wise. We
are, in truth, mostly unconscious beings. I n the beginning, we are
mostly asleep. Societ y conditions our consciousness. And so we remain
unconscious to our true self for at least the first half of life.

Then comes the question – how can one awaken from this state of
unconsciousness? Well, by discovering your archet ype, you’ve already
taken the first step.

Exercise 1: Self-talk

The impor tance of this exercise will be for you to commit yourself to
the journey of individuation, and allow you to begin each new day
with a strong sense of purpose. Begin your day by saying aloud
anyone of these sentences. You can say any one of them on any given
day, in any given order.

1. “I am different and there is no one else in the world who is like me.”

2. “I enjoy being a unique individual.”

3. “I have distinc t tastes regarding ever y aspec t of life.”

4. “Ever yone around me has a stor y wor th listening to.”

5. “My differences will make a difference in this world.”

6. “I accept and embrace the differences of others.”

7. “ Variet y is the spice of life.”

I f you’d like to add on to this list, please feel free to craf t your
own self-talk affirmations. Do be sure to have them focused on i n d i v id-
uation and your uniqueness.

Exercise 2: Direc ted imagination

Some of you might be more familiar with the term “guided visualiza-
tion”. This exercise will alllow you to visualize yourself expressing your
pleasant idiosyncrasies to an accepting audience.

To begin this exercise, you will need to first identify your tendencies
and behavioural traits that you believe to be distinc tive of who you
are. Perhaps it could be your tendenc y to be enthusiastic over the
smallest things, or perhaps you find yourself wanting to make odd
sounds when you’re by yourself.

I t doesn’t have to be any of those, it can be literally any trait or

habit that you have that differentiates you from others. Write
those traits down.

Now, you will have to close your eyes and imagine your trusted friends
and family around you. Take the time to pic ture their expressions, the
clothes that they ’re wearing, their moods, the setting. I t could be in a
restaurant, or in the comfor t of your own home. Establish all of these
details.

I magine a conversation tak ing place. What ’s ever yone saying to each
other? When you feel that the time is right, I want you to exhibit any
one of the traits that you’ve just written down. Visualize their reac tions
and expressions towards the traits that you’ve just displayed. They have
to be suppor tive, positive, and reaffirming. Remember, visualization is
all about imagination. Even if the expressions that you’re pic turing
seem unlikely to take place in real life, your imaginations and v i s u a l -
izations are within your span of control.

Exercise 3: Energy toning

We can transplant energy tone from one situation to another.

I nstead of direc ting our attention to ward a present objec t (such as a
helpful co -worker), we generate thoughts and imager y of a non-present
objec t or situation; for example, in the midst of the stressful work- day,
we "daydream" of our fun vacation or our loving spouse.

Again, as with the "direc ted imagination" technique, this technique

does not release us from the obligation of coming to terms with the
present archet ypes, but the technique can introduce some pleasant
energy tones into the situation while we explore those present a r c h e -
t ypes. We can transplant energy tones from various t ypes of situations:

A memor y. We can dwell upon about a memor y - something which

has happened in our physical realit y.

A fantasy. We can dwell upon a fantasy - something which has not

happened in our physical realit y.

An analogy. We can dwell upon a previous situation - something s i m -

ilar to the present situation. Because the previous situation and our
present circumstances are similar, they involve some of the same
archet ypes. When we are in the stress ful work-place, we can recall
stressful situations in which we succeeded despite the stress; we
remember the specific previous thoughts, images, energy tones, and
ac tions so that we can dwell on them and build from them in this
current circumstance. We say " this reminds me of ....," and then we
proceed on the basis of the previously implanted elements (while intu-
iting the current fac tors which differ from those of the prior a r c h e t y p-
al encounter).

ARCHETYPAL FIELD-WORK

Exercise 4: The As I f Principle

This principle says that we can create outer circumstances by ac ting

"as if " they are already real; for example, we can be happy by ac ting as
if we are happy. While the principle might seem to be based on
super ficial, "magical" reasoning, it does have some validit y when it is
used in accordance with the dynamics of spirit, archet ypes, and a r c h e -
t ypal fields.

We implant new elements into our archet ypal field. When we ac t as if,
we are not merely "going through the motions" as though we are a
physical machine; instead, we are being creative in all aspec ts of the
archet ypal field - generating not only the physical motions, but also
the thoughts, images, and energy tones which correspond to that
physical ac tion.

These elements are implanted into the archet ypal field, so that the
mind can use them as a reference when the archet ypal situation occurs
again and the mind asks itself ; "How do I tend to respond in this t ype
of situation? " For example, if we ac t as if we are confident in an
archet ypal "challenging situation," the thoughts, images, energy tones,
and physical habits of confidence will be available to be used as the
mind's reference points when we are in another "challenging situa-
tion." I n that example of "courage," the elements might include-
thoughts such as:

1. "I do my best in ever y situation"

2. "I am capable of handling challenges"
3. "Life supplies me with the resources to prevail because I am doing
what life's intuition is guiding me to do"
4. "I enjoy the stimulation when I am in challenging situations"
5. "I am successful because I allow life to direc t me and empower me."

INDIVIDUALOGIST.COM 11
P R E M I U M A R C H E T Y PA L A N A LY S I S

ARCHETYPAL FIELD-WORK

I t might also include an energy to ne of courage and expansiveness

rather than fear, which comes in the form of visual images of ourselves
standing brave and dignified. These images might be derived from:

Our direc ted imagination. We visualized a fic titious scenario in

which we were brave.

Ac tual sensor y data. I nformation that we’ve recorded as memories

during the occasions when we were courageous.

Think about some of the traits that you believe will be helpful to your
personalit y and write them down. Af ter that, write down a few posi-
tive affirmations that will be easy for you to remember and recall,
related to the traits that you’ve written down.

Exercise 5: Obeying I ntuition

I ntuition is a process by which the conscious mind is aware of the

dynamics of spirit and matter in a situation. (Spirit is the tangible,
non-material substance of which the soul is composed.) I n any situation,
intuition discerns all dynamic fac tors - ever yone's needs (material,
emotional, mental, spiritual), ever yone's psychological state (i.e.,
emotions, thoughts, etc.), ever yone's archet ypal-field elements (i.e.,
residual thoughts, etc., from previous similar archet ypal encounters),
all material objec ts (e.g., the available resources including money, any
material hindrances to our goal, etc.), and so on.

We can test our intuition more frequently. I ntuition isn' t applied

only in major events; it is a constant process which gives information
regarding ever ything in our environment (and
ever ything which might enter our environment in the future).
For prac tice, we can test our obser vations, and our courses of
ac tion:

Obser vations.
1. Where did I leave my car keys?
2. Who is calling me (when our phone is ringing)?
3. Is the sk y cloudy today (before we look outside in the morning)?
4. What do my feelings tell me about that stranger, or that
news repor t, or that painting?
5. What will that person say or do nex t?
6. Whose letters will be in my mailbox today?
7. Which tie will my boss wear tomorrow?
8. What do I believe with regard to this moral, political, or religious
issue (k nowing that our beliefs are based on intuition and not fac ts)?
9. Is this person trust wor thy?

INDIVIDUALOGIST.COM 13
P R E M I U M A R C H E T Y PA L A N A LY S I S

ARCHETYPAL FIELD-WORK

Courses of ac tion.
1. What should I do nex t?
2. What should I say nex t?
3. Will I be happy if I date that person?
4. Will I be successful I accept that job offer?
5. Which high way will have less traffic congestion?
6. What is the solution to this household problem?
7. How can I earn more money?

These are just some of the intuition-testing answers that you can ask
yourself on a daily basis. The more you’re able to embrace your intu-
ition and “train it ”, the better you will get at learning to trust it and
listen to it.

Recall instances in your life when you listened to your intuition.

Describe the results of it. List down some of the struggles that you
encounter when it comes to listening to your intuition.

UNCOVERING THE PERSONA

The persona is one of the archet ypes that plays a ver y prominent
role for most of us. The persona refers to the social mask you wear
in public. I t is the par t of your conscious self that you present to the
outside world; it is the image you wish to present to o thers. The
persona includes your social roles, and it can be seen as a k ind of
‘psychological clothing’ that you wear.

The word ‘persona’ comes from the Latin, literally meaning ‘mask ’,
‘false face’, or ‘charac ter played by an ac tor ’. This term was used for
large masks that early Greek ac tors used to wear to por tray their
charac ters. The primar y func tion of these masks was not to hide the
ac tor, but to give information about the charac ter. I n similar ways,
the persona helps us ‘get into charac ter ’ in order to be able to
per form a role that is expec ted of us. I nevitably, wearing the mask
conceals the person behind that persona.

The persona, as defined by Carl Jung, refers to —”a k ind of mask ,

designed on the one hand to make a definite impression upon others,
and on the other to conceal the true nature of the individual.”

These exercises are designed to help you uncover, recognize, and

develop your persona, giving you a deeper understanding of your
archet ype.

UNCOVERING THE PERSONA

Exercise 8: Developing and Understanding The Persona

Identifying too strongly with a specific persona can limit your p s yc h o-

logical growth as an individual. People can sometimes become i d e n t i -
cal with their personas. For example, a judge by profession may ac t
like a judge all the time, even at home. Someday, even if this i n d i v i d u -
al feels like doing something that does not conform to the role of a
judge, for instance, dancing in the rain, he will not do so. He could
become excessively concerned with ‘what people think ’, and see h i m -
self only in terms of super ficial roles and facades. This could depic t an
unreflec ting state of mind, where it is difficult for the individual to
look at himself as distinc t (or much more) than what the societ y
expec ts of them.

Identifying too strongly with your persona can make you mistakenly
believe that you are what you pretend to be, that your persona is your
true nature, whereas in realit y the persona is by no means a true
identifier of your holistic self.

The goal here is that you develop a mor e realistic and flexible perso-
na that helps you to navigate in societ y, but does not collide with, or
hide your true self. I t involves playing the roles that societ y expec ts
you to play, but also embracing your innermost and incomparable
uniqueness. The persona then becomes appropriate and tasteful, a
true r eflec tion of your inner individualit y as well as your out ward
sense of self.

DIMINISHING THE SHADOW

The shadow is most destruc tive, insidious and dangerous when

habitually repressed and projec ted, manifesting in myriad
psychological disturbances ranging from neurosis to psychosis,
irrational interpersonal hostilit y, and even cataclysmic international
clashes. Such deleterious symptoms, attitudes and behavior stem from
being possessed or driven by the dissociated yet undaunted shadow.

The shadow is simply the black side of someone's self personalit y.

What is black is always k nown only indirec tly through projec tion upon
others. This is why the first meeting with the shadow is considered to
be a moral effor t. Also one discovers his black side as like coming
from the outside (because of the psychical projec tion). The difficult y
of absorbing the shadow is huge if we have to face alone this power ful
feature.

The process of diminishing the shadow is one that is difficult, arduous,

but necessar y nonetheless. That being said, it would be presumptuous
to say that the process can be per formed with just a few exercises.
This series of exercises, therefore, will help you prepare yourself for
the journey towards diminishing your shadow.

DIMINISHING THE SHADOW

Exercise 9: Cultivating Courage

I ndividuation is a journey of conflic t, as we continually asser t our

individualit y against the internal seduc tion toward psychological
placidit y and even regression, and against the ex ternal demand for
social conformit y and "adjustment." But the refusal to allow the
individuation process can be even more painful; we experience p s yc h o -
logical stagnation and crises, and even neurosis or psychosis
(according to Jung). Let us now look into the process of cultivating
courage for us to face our shadows.

When you think a fear ful thought, how does your body feel?

Do you feel relaxed and grounded when you think the thought?
Or do you feel tightness in your chest or gripping in your solar
plexus?

I ntuition (one form of true fear) tends to come with a ver y relaxed
physical feeling, accompanied by a sense of direc t k nowing, whereas
false fear tends to feel tense in a body and panick y in the mind.
