50 hours
Feedback and grades are normally made available within 15 working days of the coursework
deadline

Learning Outcomes:

1. Critically evaluate web-based Content Management Systems

Plagiarism is presenting somebody else's work as your own. It includes: copying

information directly from the Web or books without referencing the material; submitting
joint coursework as an individual effort; copying another student's coursework; stealing
coursework from another student and submitting it as your own work. Suspected
plagiarism will be investigated and if found to have occurred will be dealt with according
to the procedures set down by the University. Please see the assessment misconduct
procedure for further details of what is / isn't plagiarism.
Note that including writing generated by AI as your own work is an Academic Offence
(see also the Guidance on the use of artificial intelligence (AI)), and penalties apply as
detailed in above procedures.
All material copied or amended from any source (e.g. internet, books) must be
referenced correctly according to the reference style you are using.

Your work will be submitted for plagiarism checking. Any attempt to bypass our
plagiarism detection systems will be treated as a severe Assessment Offence.

1
Coursework Submission Requirements
 An electronic copy of your work for this coursework must be fully uploaded on the deadline
date using the link on the coursework Moodle page for COMP1643.
 For this coursework, you must submit a report as PDF document. In general, any text in the
document must not be an image (i.e. must not be scanned) and would normally be
generated from other documents (e.g. MS Office using "Save As .. PDF"). An exception to this
is handwritten mathematical notation, but when scanning, do ensure the file size is not
excessive.
 There are limits on the file size (see the relevant course Moodle page).
 Make sure that any files you upload are virus-free and not protected by a password or
corrupted otherwise, they will be treated as null submissions.
 You must NOT submit a paper copy of this coursework.
 All courseworks must be submitted as above. Under no circumstances can they be accepted
by academic staff.
 A website needs to be created with the content management system indicated by the tutor
as part of the assessment.

The University website has details of the current Coursework Regulations, including details of penalties for
late submission, procedures for Extenuating Circumstances, and penalties for Assessment Offences. See
https://www.gre.ac.uk/student-services/exams/regs and the Academic Regulations for Taught Awards.

Coursework Specification
This coursework consists of an individual report along with a product you created (presentation
video and product itself).
 You will get an individual grade (100%) based on
o your report, which must be entirely in your own words
o the product (website) and a presentation video of the product

Scenario: You are a CMS consultant advising a museum and are asked to write a critical report for
the management about the use of a new Information and Content Management system for their
organisation’s website. In the coursework report, you discuss several different options for web-
based CMS’s, and you make recommendations for the governance of the website and the SEO
strategy. You will also evaluate your developed website and present the website in a video, in which
you demonstrate its main features. You conclude by providing further recommendations on their
(future) use of an Information and Content Management system. You can choose a museum of your
preference (for example, a local or national museum, or the British Museum, the Louvre, the Natural
History Museum, the National Maritime Museum etc.).

Specification of the product task

Website
Use SharePoint, or the CMS specified by your tutor, to develop a website for a museum to organise
and share its external information (e.g. the homepage, the collections, a visit us page, a support us
page etc.). Implement as much functionality as possible, basing it on a real organisation which you
must specify. Not all pages of the existing website need to be created; aim to focus on two potential
user journeys. Use the organisation’s existing website as an example and make adjustments in the
design where necessary or appropriate. At least one of the items of functionality implemented must

2
involve a database and a workflow (e.g. a feature for submitting a question via the contact us, or
making a financial donation). For the purpose of this coursework, you may use images and text from
the existing organisation’s website if needed. Your website must not be accessible by anyone who
does not know the site’s password or have a relevant login account. The site is developed for
educational purposes and not published, thus avoiding copyright issues.

Presentation video
Produce a presentation video including a screencast illustrating the design and functionality of the
site. The expected length is 4-7 minutes. If the submitted work exceeds the limit by more than 10%,
marks will be reduced. Present the finished product to a non-technical audience of the
organisation’s management to explain the features of the website.

Criteria for the product component are:

 Site design and functionality (of the CMS) (25%)
Appropriate content, layout, and information architecture for the selected organisation and
significant implementation of functionalities and links, including some implementation of a
database and workflow.

 Presentation video (10%)

Professional standard of presentation for the client. This should include a screencast
demonstrating all the main features of the product.

Coursework report
The report must include the URL to the product (website) you produced and be accompanied by a
presentation video. Ensure that your report has evidence that your product meets the specified
product requirements. The text in your report must be entirely your own words.

The report needs to include:

 Professional written communication (5%)
a report of professional standard and formatting, professional writing style, English
proficiency, language use and use of appropriate referencing in Harvard Style of relevant
sources for the coursework.
 A review of Content Management Systems (20%)
a review of three potential content management systems for the scenario given (different
CMS’s than the one used to build the website). Adequate criteria for the purpose outlined in
the assessment specification need to be used. Information used in the review needs to be
appropriately referenced using Harvard style.
 Evaluation of product and design process (10%)
The design process of the site is documented and the product evaluated. Appropriate
screenshots and commentary with evaluative comments on the product are included. Needs
to discuss the functionalities, the challenges, indicate the insights, point out the product’s
strengths and weaknesses, and possible solutions.
 Governance aspects (10%)
Recommendations for the organisation’s management regarding the
maintenance/governance of the site you developed (e.g. permissions and maintaining
quality). These need to be concrete and adequate for the purpose outlined in the
coursework specification.

3
 SEO strategy (10%)
a suitable and justified SEO strategy for the website should be discussed. An outline for your
organisation of the actions that need to be taken or considered to improve the visibility of
the site in search results after launch.
 Conclusion and CMS recommendation(s) (10%)
Expect: The used CMS for the website is contrasted with other CMS’s (mentioned in the
earlier discussed review), includes the ideal choice for the organisation and the reasoning is
well explained. Steps for future work and implementation are mentioned.

Word Length: 2500 to 3000 words. If the submitted work exceeds the limit by more than 10%, marks
will be reduced.
You may want to refer to the annotated table of contents available from the COMP1643 Moodle
page to help you structure your report.

Deliverables
1. An Individual Report (2500-3000 words)
The text in your report must be entirely in your own words and follow the specification
above (see the section about the report). The report must also be accompanied by the
product (include link) and the presentation video.

2. A website using a CMS and a presentation video

a. A website using a content management system following the above specification.

Provide the URL in your individual report.

b. The presentation video should be pitched at a non-technical audience intended for

the management of your chosen organisation; and should demonstrate the
functionalities of the site.
