Follow the guidelines below in submitting your work.

1. Your homework should have this cover page duly filled out by you.
2. Where possible and applicable, your solution should be typed and printed.
3. Use white, preferably plain, A4-sized paper in your submission.
4. Do not write on the back side of your papers.
5. Multiple sheets should be stapled together in the upper left corner.
6. Start a new page for every new problem. However, more than one sub-problem (or short
problems) can be answered on the same sheet.
7. Arrange problems in the order they are assigned. Do not change problem numbers.
8. Show your work in an organized manner. Do not crowd your solution pages.
9. Elaborate on any assumptions made or shortcuts (jumps) taken in your solution.
10. Reference your figures, tables, constants, equations and conversions, used to complete the
problem.

I declare that this submission is my own, and that no part of it has been copied from another source

HW1 (due 11/2/2024)

Ch1

Q1. A consumer would like to buy a heater in this cold winter. Discuss how the eight dimension of
quality impacts the heater overall acceptance by the consumer. Explain the product features that
could be used to describe or measure each dimension.

Q2. What are the three primary technical tools used for quality control and improvement

Q3. Distinguish among quality planning, quality assurance and quality control and improvement

Q4. What is a six sigma process?

Q5. How can lean and six sigma work together to eliminate waste.

Q6. A manufacturing company produces part A where its thickness is critical size as the part will be
assembled with another part B. The manufacturing process produces part A with a mean thickness
of 7.5 cm and standard deviation of 0.05 cm. In order to achieve a perfect fit between the two parts,
the thickness specification for Part A is set to 7.5 ±0.15. Anything outside the specification limits will
create a misfit and part A is sent back for a rework. (Assume the thickness is normally distributed)

1. At what sigma level the process is currently performing

2. What is the percentage in ppm of part A that needs rework. (use centered at target normal
distribution)
3. What would be the standard deviation if the company would like to achieve six sigma level
performance?
Ch2.
