CSBP 315 – Operating System Fundamentals

Lab 0 – Install Lab Virtual Machine

Objective:
Install VirtualBox host machine on Windows or MacOS systems.

Procedure:

1. Please install Oracle VM VirtualBox first:

Download VirualBox for Windows/OSX Hosts and install into your laptop.
You also need to install Extension Pack from above website.

2. Then download the lab Ubuntu Linux Virtual Machine Image (Lubuntu.zip)
onto your Desktop from UAEU OneDrive provided by your lab instructor
and do the following steps (FIRST TIME ONLY): or(CSBP315-LabVM.zip)
 Unzip the above virtual machine image, which contains a folder with 2
files.
 Open (click) Lubuntu.vbox file (blue), which should open VirtualBox
automatically.
 All configuration is automatically done.
 DON'T DELETE/MOVE THIS FOLDER.
 You can save the ZIP file somewhere; in case you need to restore a clean
lab Linux VM in the future.
o Just remove the old VM in VirtualBox and repeat the first 3 steps
again.

3. Start the Ubuntu Linux Virtual Machine


 Click on the "Start" button on the VirtualBox toolbar

 Once the VM is running successfully, the login screen will appear:

o Login using "lubuntu" user.


o Password is also "lubuntu".

4. Once login, you will see the Desktop as shown below:

 However, if you can’t see the full Desktop, you can use the VirtualBox
View menu to switch to Full-Screen mode or Scaled-Screen mode to
properly display your Desktop.

5. To shutdown/exit the Ubuntu Linux Virtual Machine

 Select “Power” button on bottom right corner and click Shutdown.
