INTRODUCTION
The agricultural sector has witnessed a significant transformation propelled by advancements in
technology and the increasing demand for efficient and sustainable farming practices. Amidst
this evolving landscape, the integration of digital solutions and information technology has
emerged as a cornerstone for modernizing farm operations and enhancing productivity (Liang
and Shah, 2023). One such innovation is a Farm Product Management System (FPMS), tailored
to meet the diverse needs of farmers in managing their crops, livestock, and resources.
The proposed project is to design and implement a web-based Farm Product Management
System (FPMS), a solution to assist farmers in managing their crops, livestock, and resources
more efficiently. The system will offer a range of features aimed at streamlining day-to-day tasks
and enabling farmers to make informed decisions. Key features of the FPMS will include crop
growth tracking and record keeping for animal health and breeding information. Furthermore, the
system will provide up-to-date information on market prices and weather conditions, helping
farmers determine the optimal times to harvest and sell their products (Rhoads, 2023).

STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

Most of the current methods of managing farm products rely heavily on manual record-keeping
practices, characterized by their tedious nature and susceptibility to errors. Compounded by the
lack of real-time data accessibility and the absence of a centralized system, farmers often
encounter delays in decision-making processes and face challenges in optimizing resource
allocation efficiently (Cheema and Khan, 2019; Liang and Shah, 2023). This inefficiency not
only hampers operational productivity but also poses significant barriers to maximizing crop
yields and livestock productivity. Addressing these limitations is imperative to enhance farm
management practices, streamline decision-making, and foster sustainable agricultural
development in an increasingly digital age. Therefore, this research seeks to develop a web-
based Farm Product Management System (FPMS) that overcomes the shortcomings of
traditional methods, providing farmers with intuitive tools for real-time data tracking,
streamlined record-keeping, and informed decision-making.
RESEARCH AIM AND OBJECTIVES
This research aim is to design and implement a web-based farm product management system.
The specific objectives are to:
i. Design the system using the appropriate Unified Modelling Language (UML)
ii. Implement the system design in (i) above
iii. Evaluate the system implemented in (ii) above

JUSTIFICATION
FPMS will address the pressing concerns surrounding farm resource management by providing
robust crop growth tracking tools. According to Nayak et al. (2020), these functionalities
empower farmers to conserve precious resources and augment crop yields simultaneously. Also,
the FPMSs will have functionalities to maintain accurate records relating to animal health and
breeding details which will foster accountability and unlock new avenues for optimizing herd
productivity and welfare as posited by Liang and Shah (2023). Consequently, informed decision-
making will ensue, bolstering the financial stability of farming enterprises. Real-time reporting
of market prices and prevailing weather conditions will provide farmers with actionable insights
to guide timely harvests and sales strategies (Cheema and Khan, 2019). Such knowledge will
prevent unnecessary losses due to unfavourable market fluctuations or adverse climatic
variations, thereby safeguarding farmer interests amid volatile markets.

METHODOLOGY
i. The system will be designed using appropriate UML diagrams like Use Case Diagram,
Sequence Diagram, Activity Diagram and Class Diagram. Also, the system architecture
will be designed
ii. The system will be implemented using appropriate programming language: HTML,
CSS and JavaScript for the front-end and PHP/MYSQL for the back-end.
iii. The system will be evaluated for usability.

LITERATURE REVIEW
In their study, Cheema and Khan, 2019 employed IoT to address the challenges in agriculture
sustainability to enable the agricultural industry to meet the increasing demand for food
production while overcoming indigenous agricultural problems in developing nations. They
utilised geospatial data, real-time satellite and UAV data, and in-situ smart sensors, alongside
weather and soil data, offering a comprehensive understanding of crop-soil-weather interactions.
Machine learning analytics of this big data provides decision support for precision agriculture
techniques, livestock management, and crop water and pest/disease management. The project
emphasizes the future of farming lies in cloud-based big data analytics, data-sharing apps, and
integrated platforms, catering to the needs of both modern and developing agricultural sectors.

Similarly, Mohamed et al. (2021) explore innovative solutions in smart farming (SF) from 2019
to 2021, leveraging advanced technologies like AI, IoT, and mobile internet to address global
challenges of food shortage and population growth. It details the process of data gathering,
transmission, storage, and analysis, focusing on IoT's pivotal role in connecting sensor devices
for tasks such as smart irrigation. Implementation includes unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
and robots for functions like harvesting and livestock monitoring, facilitated by AI, DL, ML, and
wireless communications. Emphasis is placed on the importance of 5G networks for high-speed
data transfer and device connectivity. Despite challenges in developing countries, the project
highlights SDSS implementation for real-time soil analysis and decision support. Overall, smart
agriculture in developing nations requires governmental and private sector support to realize its
full potential in addressing sustainability concerns.

However, Rhoads (2023) explores how IoT and AI technologies can create a holistic system for
crop management, enabling real-time monitoring, predictive analytics, automation, precision
irrigation, yield optimization, and supply chain integration. AI-powered robotic systems reduce
manual labour, and precision practices optimize irrigation and fertilization, reducing costs and
environmental impact. Machine learning predicts crop yields and suggests optimization
strategies. Despite the transformative potential, challenges such as data privacy and technology
costs need addressing. This study emphasizes ongoing research, development, and policy-
making to fully harness AI and IoT in revolutionizing agriculture.
While the studies mentioned emphasized the use of IoT sensors and big data analytics for
decision support, this research emphasizes the importance of creating a centralized system with
intuitive user interfaces and real-time data access, catering to the needs of both modern and
developing agricultural sectors and people in rural communities.
